Umweltprobleme machen nicht an Grenzen Halt. Mit dem Entstehen nationaler und internationaler Umweltpolitik um 1970 geriet das Thema auch auf die politische Agenda der Bundesrepublik und der DDR. Ob Werra- oder Elbeverschmutzung, Geruchsbelästigung oder Müllverbringung – die Themen waren vielfältig und die Probleme drängend. Die Umweltverhandlungen zwischen beiden deutschen Staaten gestalteten sich jedoch kompliziert, wurden mehrfach unterbrochen und unterlagen sowohl äußeren als auch inneren Einflüssen. Erst in der zweiten Hälfte der 1980er Jahre führten die Bemühungen zu konkreten Maßnahmen. Gerahmt wird diese ökologische und diplomatische Verflechtungsgeschichte sowohl von Geschehnissen der internationalen Entspannungspolitik des Kalten Krieges als auch von Protest und Engagement der Zivilgesellschaft. Die auf einer breiten empirischen Quellenlage basierende Studie befindet sich damit an der Schnittstelle zweier aktueller Forschungsfelder, der Umweltgeschichte und den Cold War Studies.

With German reunification and the demise of the German Democratic Republic in 1990, East German historians and their traditions of historiography were removed from mainstream discourse in Germany and relegated to the periphery. By the mid-1990s, few GDR-trained historians remained in academia. These developments led to a greater degree of intellectual pluralism, yet marginalized many accomplished scholars. East German Historians since Reunification assesses what was gained and lost in the process of dissolving and remaking GDR institutions of historical scholarship. The collection combines primary and secondary sources: younger scholars offer analyses of East German historiography, while senior scholars who lived through the dismantling process provide firsthand accounts. Contributors address broad trends in scholarship as well as particular subfields and institutions. What unites them is a willingness to think critically about the achievements and shortcomings of GDR historiography, and its fate after German reunification.

From the late eighteenth century, Germans increasingly identified the fate of their nation with that of their woodlands. A variety of groups soon mobilized the 'German forest' as a national symbol, though often in ways that suited their own social, economic, and political interests. The German Forest is the first book-length history of the development and contestation of the concept of 'German' woodlands. Jeffrey K. Wilson challenges the dominant interpretation that German connections to nature were based in agrarian romanticism rather than efforts at modernization. He explores a variety of conflicts over the symbol from demands on landowners for public access to woodlands, to state attempts to integrate ethnic Slavs into German culture through forestry, and radical nationalist visions of woodlands as a model for the German 'race'. Through impressive primary and archival research, Wilson demonstrates that in addition to uniting Germans, the forest as a national symbol could also serve as a vehicle for protest and strife.

It was supposed to revolutionize the transportation sector in Germany, connect the metropoles with the countryside, and encourage motorization.
