Deutsche Einwanderer in die Sudstaaten hoben sich vom Rest des deutschen Auswandererstromes nicht nur durch die Wahl ihres Siedlungsgebietes ab, sondern auch durch die Wahl ihres Beschaftigungsfeldes. Jahrhunderts gelang es der German Community von Washington, DC, fast mühelos zwischen den Polen „Integration in die amerikanische Gesellschaft“ und „Konstituierung als ethnische Gruppe“ zu agieren und diese an sich widersprüchlichen Tendenzen in sich zu vereinen: Das Hineinwachsen in das hauptstädtische Gefüge erfolgte paradoxerweise vor allem durch den Aufbau einer im öffentlichen Raum stark sichtbaren ethnischen Gemeinde. Kernelement des Integrationsprozesses war dabei die Entwicklung einer interessengeleiteten, hybriden Identität, die sich aus den Identitäten als Deutsche, Deutschamerikaner und Hauptstadtbewohner zusammensetzte und mit einem starkem Amerikapatriotismus verwoben war.
