An diesem Gebiet der Deutung zeitgeschichtlicher Ereignisse soll die Art und Weise seines Geschichtsdenkens wie seiner Wirklichkeitserfassung berhaupt deutlich werden. Die soziologischen Ph nomene, die in den Werken der 90er Jahre des 18. Jahrhunderts in Erscheinung treten, k nnen deshalb nur als Material und Stoff dienen, an denen sich die Interpretation entlang zu tasten hat, um zu dem Denksystem vorzudringen, das hinter ihnen liegt. Zentral in der allgemeinen Darstellung bleibt die Frage nach Goethes Verh ltnis zur Revolution als besonderes politisches Ereignis. Hier treffen die Einzeldarstellungen zu diesem Thema mit den Gesamtdarstellungen des politischen Weltbildes zusammen. Gemeinsam ist ihnen allen die Fragestellung, was Goethe bewogen haben k nnte, der Franz sischen Revolution anders gegen berzutreten als ihre Wortf hrer; warum und inwiefern er es als st rend und zerst rend empfunden hat; was er eigentlich gegen sie aufgeboten hat; womit er ihr gegen ber getreten ist. Abschlie end wird auf Goethes Einstellung zu den Ph nomenen der Macht und der historischen Gr e eingegangen. Diese offenbart sich f r ihn verdichtet in der Gestalt Napoleons.

This book, originally published in 1992, traces the discourse on the French Revolution in Germany and its contributors investigate the processes and results of adopting or rejecting the values of the French Revolution in Germany and reinterprets its documents in terms of their internalization. One of the questions discussed is whether the French Revolution is part of Germany’s progressive tradition, that is, whether it has been repressed or whether it constitutes a viable counter-discourse within the political culture. The first successful revolution in Germany – the ‘Velvet Revolution’ of Autumn 1989 does not fit the definition of ‘classic revolutions, but it ended in a change of power in Germany and in that respect, this book is an anatomy of German political consciousness before 1989.
