In an deren Archiven, deren Bestimmungen die Versendung von Archivalien nicht gestatteten, wurde die Arbeit an Ort und Stelle gemacht so durch Dr. Friedensburg in Dresden und Weimar, durch Dr. Wrede in München und durch Dr. Redlich in Ulm. In Wien hat sich Herr I M. G. Win t e r besonderes Verdienst um das U ntemehmen dadurch envorben, daß er unter seiner Leitung Absehrz'ften aus dem ehemaligen Erz/mnzlerarehiv anfertigen ließ und überhaupt in jeder Weise die Ar beiten förderte. In Venedig und Rom hat Dr. Friedensburg nach seinem Fortgange von Göttingen für die Reichstagsakten die Archive durchforscht. Bei der Behandlung der deutschen Texte wurden im wesentlichen die von Weizsr'i cker aufgestellten G1undsätze befolgt, nur fand bei der Vereinfachung der Konsonantenhäufung wobei W e i z sa cke r die Tenuis vor der Media bevorzugt, eine größere Annäherung an (lie moderne Schreibweise statt; man schrieb also land fur landt (nicht wie 1ve izsäcker: laut). Bei den französisct Tecten wurden zur Erleichterung des Verstandnisses soweit es möglich war, moderne Aeeente und Apostrqnhe gesetzt. Using a comparative perspective, this volume studies the court as a crucial center of government and politics, as well as the dominant focus for the ruling elites. The essays explore how the early modern court gradually developed from the medieval royal household to its very different form in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Comparing England, Germany, France, Spain as well as the Netherlands and Italy, the editors find that several common themes emerge: the problem of integrating a number of often vastly different provinces and principalities through the attraction of a court; the capital city's function as the basis of the court and as its rival; the role of the Court during the great religious conflicts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; and the court as an instrument for domesticating the nobility and a stronghold of aristocratic influence.

Fascination with royal pomp and circumstance is as old as kingship itself. The authors of Coronations examine royal ceremonies from the ninth to the sixteenth century, and find the very essence of the monarchical state in its public presentation of itself.
