Excerpt from Deutsche Syntax, Vol. 1 Was endlich die anordnung im ganzen betrifft, so habe ich vor allem im auge gehabt, dass die grammatik eine empirisch historische wissenschaft ist, keine spekulative. Die historische gram matik sucht die wissenschaftliehkeit in der behandlungsweise, nicht im system. Ein geruste aus logischen abtheiluugen und unterabthei lungen bestehend, ist und bleibt ein geruste, das jeder andere philo sophische sprachforscher uber den haufen wirft. Der lernende siehtvor lauter geruste das gebaude nicht, das durftig sich dahinter verbirgt. Aus der ermittelung des sprachgebrauches fugt sich von selbst und kunstlos das gebaude, das bei jeder sprache theil weise ein anderes ist. Ich habe mich von dem vorgefundenen stoff bestimmen lassen und meist nach den arten der worter und ihrer fugung geordnet. Die schien mir das naturlichste und zweckmaigste. In meinen schulschriften aus fruheren jahren habe ich, da am satze der gedanke haftet, mehr logisches mit einflieen lassen. Die kann zwar im unterrichte anregend wirken, die reine wissenschaft aber mu es fallen lassen. Viel leicht gelingt es auch auf diese weise den deutschen unter richt mit der grammatik der alten sprachen in groere uber einstimmung zu bringen. The book is written for students with basic knowledge about case, constituent tests, and simple phrase structure grammars (advanced BA or MA level) and for researchers with an interest in the Germanic languages and/or an interest in Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar/Sign-Based Construction Grammar without having the time to deal with all the details of these theories.
