Der Weg in die deutsch-ukrainische Kollaboration im Zweiten Weltkrieg war lang. Nationalisten beider 'zu kurz gekommenen' Völker strebten schon seit 1914 nach einer Zusammenarbeit gegen vorgebliche gemeinsame Feinde - Polen, Russen, Juden. Frank Golczewski beleuchtet unter neuen Fragestellungen die weithin unbekannte, oft groteske Geschichte zweier ungleicher Partner und ihrer ideologisch-politischen Konzepte für die Änderung des status quo. Seit 1914 versuchten beide Seiten kontinuierlich, einander für die eigenen Ziele nutzbar zu machen. Ukrainische Nationalisten im Exil buhlten um deutsche Politiker, Deutsche benutzten sie, um an die versprochenen Reichtümer der Ukraine zu gelangen. Beide Seiten täuschten einander - und suchten anschließend gleich wieder neue Kooperation. Deutsche Stellen hatten Be-ziehungen zu 'ihren' jeweiligen Ukrainern, die sich - wie bei Emigranten nicht selten - heftig befehdeten. In der gemeinsamen Ent-frem-dung von der Entente kristallisierte sich das Aufeinander-Verwiesen-Sein deutscher und ukrainischer politischer Kreise heraus. Konstante Elemente dieses Verhältnisses waren die Beziehungen zu Polen. Sowohl als 'Feind meines Feindes' als auch in gemeinhin unterschätzter Partnerschaft zwischen 1934 und 1939 war das Verhältnis zwischen Deut-schen und Ukrainern eine Funktion des jeweiligen deutsch-polnischen Ver-hältnisses. Das antijüdische Motiv gewann von den 1920er Jahren an zunehmende Bedeutung. Und auch die Beziehungen zu Sowjetrussland und der Sowjetunion wirkten sich auf die deutsch-ukrainischen Kontakte aus. Für die ukrainische Seite erwies sich die Entwicklung als eine Kette enttäuschter Hoffnungen, kurzsichtiger Planungen und des gegen-seitigen Verrats. Für die deutschen Politikgestalter und die deutschen Geheimdienste, ob vor oder nach 1933, waren die Ukrainer nur eine Karte im großen Spiel. In wenigen klarsichtigen Momenten nahmen ukrainische Vertreter das auch wahr - um sofort wieder in die nächste Falle zu tappen. Das Buch erschüttert mehrere historiographische Legenden. Besondere Auf-merksamkeit widmet es den subjektiven Einschätzungen der Akteure. So entsteht ein Bild von sehr unterschiedlichen Partnern, denen gegen Ende der dreißiger Jahre aber eines gemein war: die Bereitschaft, alles zu riskieren, um den status quo zu verändern.

Known as Lemberg in German and Lwów in Polish, the city of L'viv in modern Ukraine was in the crosshairs of imperial and national aspirations for much of the twentieth century. This book tells the compelling story of how its inhabitants (Roman Catholic Poles, Greek Catholic Ukrainians, and Jews) reacted to the sweeping political changes during and after World Wars I and II. The Eastern Front shifted back and forth, and the city changed hands seven times. At the end of each war, L'viv found itself in the hands of a different state. While serious tensions had existed among Poles, Ukrainians/Ruthenians, and Jews in the city, before 1914 eruptions of violence were still infrequent. The changes of political control over the city during World War I led to increased intergroup frictions, new power relations, and episodes of shocking violence, particularly against Jews. The city's incorporation into the independent Polish Republic in November 1918 after a brief period of Ukrainian rule sparked intensified conflict. Ukrainians faced discrimination and political repression under the new government, and Ukrainian nationalists attacked the Polish state. In the 1930s, anti-Semitism increased sharply. During World War II, the city experienced first Soviet rule, then Nazi occupation, and finally Soviet conquest. The Nazis deported and murdered nearly all of the city's large Jewish population, and at the end of the war the Soviet forces expelled the city's Polish inhabitants. Based on archival research conducted in L'viv, Kiev, Warsaw, Vienna, Berlin, and Moscow, as well as an array of contemporary printed sources and scholarly studies, this book examines how the inhabitants of the city reacted to the changes in political control, and how ethnic and national ideologies shaped their dealings with each other. An earlier German version of this volume was published as Kriegserfahrungen in einer multiethnischen Stadt: Lemberg 1914-1947(2011).

This edited volume is dedicated to national-socialist archaeology as a Europe-wide phenomenon. It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 1945, these transnational archaeological networks were to prove crucial for the development of national-socialist archaeological policies. This volume will reveal how national-socialist archaeology was to an extent valued positively in its time as highly innovative, even influencing the archaeology of non-occupied countries. Although in the final instance, it generally failed to displace the national archaeologies in Europe, the volume also analyses the long-term impact of national-socialist rule on the development of European archaeology. One quarter of all Holocaust victims lived on the territory that now forms Ukraine, yet the Holocaust there has not received due attention. This book delineates the participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrainska povstanska armiia—UPA), in the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine under German occupation in 1941–44. The extent of OUN and UPA’s culpability in the Holocaust has been a controversial issue in Ukraine and within the Ukrainian diaspora as well as in Jewish communities and Israel. Occasionally, the controversy has broken into the press of North America, the EU, and Israel. Triangulating sources from Jewish survivors, Soviet investigations, German documentation, documents produced by OUN itself, and memoirs of OUN activists, it has been possible to establish that: OUN militias were key actors in the anti-Jewish violence of summer 1941; OUN recruited for and infiltrated police formations that provided indispensable manpower for the Germans' mobile killing units; and in 1943, thousands of these policemen deserted from German service to join the OUN-led nationalist insurgency, during which UPA killed Jews who had managed to survive the major liquidations of 1942.

Modern Belarusian nationalism emerged in the early twentieth century during a dramatic period that included a mass exodus, multiple occupations, seven years of warfare, and the partition of the Belarusian lands. In this original history, Per Anders Rudling traces the evolution of modern Belarusian nationalism from its origins in late imperial Russia to the early 1930s. The revolution of 1905 opened a window of opportunity, and debates swirled around definitions of ethnic, racial, or cultural belonging. By March of 1918, a small group of nationalists had declared the formation of a Belarusian People's Republic (BNR), with territories based on ethnographic claims. Less than a year later, the Soviets claimed roughly the same area for a Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR). Belarusian statehood was declared no less than six times between 1918 and 1920. In 1921, the treaty of Riga officially divided the Belarusian lands between Poland and the Soviet Union. Polish authorities subjected Western Belarus to policies of assimilation, alienating much of the population. At the same time, the Soviet establishment of Belarusian-language cultural and educational institutions in Eastern Belarus stimulated national activism in Western Belarus. Sporadic partisan warfare against Polish authorities occurred until the mid-1920s, with Lithuanian and Soviet support. On both sides of the border, Belarusian activists engaged in a process of mythmaking and national mobilization. By 1926, Belarusian political activism had peaked, but then waned when coups d'etats brought authoritarian rule to Poland and Lithuania. The year 1927 saw a crackdown on the Western Belarusian national movement, and in Eastern Belarus, Stalin's consolidation of power led to a brutal transformation of society and the uprooting of Belarusian national communists. As a small group of elites, Belarusian nationalists had been dependent on German, Lithuanian, Polish, and Soviet sponsors since 1915. The geopolitical rivalry provided opportunities, but also liabilities. After 1926, maneuvering this complex and progressively hostile landscape became difficult. Support from Kaunas and Moscow for the Western Belarusian nationalists attracted the interest of the Polish authorities, and the increasingly autonomous republican institutions in Minsk became a concern for the central government in the Kremlin. As Rudling shows, Belarus was a historic battleground that served as a political tool, borderland, and buffer zone between greater powers. Nationalism arrived late, was limited to a relatively small elite, and was suppressed in its early stages. The tumultuous process, however, established the idea of Belarusian statehood, left behind a modern foundation myth, and bequeathed the institutional framework of a proto-state, all of which resurfaced as building blocks for national consolidation when Belarus gained independence in 1991.

This book describes the formation, transnational activities, and inner workings of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) in exile.
