Welchen Anteil hatte das Bibeldeutsch an der Entstehung und Ausbildung der neuhochdeutschen Schriftsprache? Die in diesem Buch zusammengestellten 16 Beiträge aus den Jahren 1990 bis 2007 gehen mit materialreichen Untersuchungen dieser Frage nach. Als Grundlage dienen die Übersetzungen von Luther, Zwingli (Zürcher Bibel) und Piscator (Herborner Bibelwerk) samt Nachdrucken bis 1710. Wie sich zeigt, waren wohl Orthographie und Flexion leichter in Übereinstimmung zu bringen als der Wortschatz. Hier zog sich der Prozeß von Auswahl und Abwahl zum Teil bis in das 18. Jahrhundert hin, oder blieb gar bei Doppelformen bis heute stehen.
