Die erste zusammenfassende Darstellung der Rolle, des Einflusses und des Selbstver-ständnisses des Protestantismus in beiden deutschen Staaten von 1945 bis zum Be-ginn der sechziger Jahre. Den Ausgangspunkt der Darstellung bildet der tief greifende ideologische und politische Gegensatz zwischen den USA und der UdSSR. Aus dieser Rivalität resultierten die Gründung zweier deutscher Staaten und ihr jeweiliger Aufbau mitsamt der kontrollierenden Begleitung durch die Siegermächte. Innerhalb dieses Rahmens bewegte sich der Protestantismus, im Osten wie im Westen Deutschlands. Er trug mit Zustimmung, aber auch mit Widerspruch zur Formung der Bundesrepublik wie der DDR bei. Erstmals werden hier sein Einwirken auf die Vor-gänge in beiden deutschen Staaten geschildert, sein gemeinsames kirchliches, politi-sches sowie gesellschaftliches Agieren und schließlich die zunehmende Konzentration auf die Herausforderungen, die sowohl seitens der Bundesrepublik als auch der DDR an ihn gestellt wurden. Dabei handelte es sich um einen ausgesprochen komplexen und spannungsreichen Prozess: Denn der Protestantismus gehörte in den fünfziger Jahren zu den entschiedensten Anwälten der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands, er för-derte aber durch seine Bemühungen um das konkrete Wohl der Menschen unter den jeweiligen politischen Bedingungen die Herausbildung getrennter Entwicklungen. Auf diesem Hintergrund zeichnet das lebendig geschriebene Buch ein Bild der an Gemeinsamkeiten wie auch Konflikten und Widersprüchen reichen, keineswegs steri-len fünfziger Jahre in der Bundesrepublik und in der DDR.

Sitting in the ruins of the Third Reich, most Germans wanted to know which of the two post-war German states would erase the material traces of their wartime suffering most quickly and most thoroughly. Consumption and the quality of everyday life quickly became important battlefields upon which the East-West conflict would be fought. This book focuses on the competing types of consumer societies that developed over time in the two Germanies and the legacy each left. Consuming Germany in the Cold War assesses why East Germany increasingly fell behind in this competition and how the failure to create a viable socialist "consumer society" in the East helped lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. By the 1970s, East Germans were well aware that the regime's bombastic promises that the GDR would soon overtake the West had become increasingly hollow. For most East German citizens, West German consumer society set the standards that East Germany repeatedly failed to meet.By exploring the ways in which East and West Germany have functioned as each other's "other" since 1949, this book suggests some of the possibilities for a new narrative of post-war German history. While taking into account the very different paths pursued by East and West Germany since 1949, the contributors demonstrate the importance of competition and highlight the connections between the two German successor states, as well as the ways in which these relationships changed throughout the period. By understanding the legacy that forty-plus years of rivalry established, we can gain a better understanding of the current tensions between the eastern and western regions of a united Germany.

In Ost und West gehörten bis zur Perestroika Ende der 1980er Jahre Jugendliche zu einer umkämpften Gruppe, der als Teil der Systemkonkurrenz politisch erhebliche Aufmerksamkeit zukam. Unter dem zunehmenden Einfluss der Massenkultur veränderte sich zudem das Freizeitleben der Jugendlichen. Gleichzeitig etablierten seit den 1960er Jahren Jugendliche innerhalb internationaler Protest-, Ostermarsch- und Friedensbewegungen neue Formen des Protestes. Durch diese neuen Konstellationen verloren die Offerten der Jugendbewegung sowie der klassischen politischen und konfessionellen Jugendorganisationen an Anziehungskraft. Was dies für Jugendliche, Jugendgruppen, Jugendbewegungen und Jugendkulturen in beiden deutschen Staaten hieß, ist Gegenstand dieses Buches, das damit einen Beitrag zur deutsch-deutschen Verflechtungsgeschichte leistet. The confrontation of the political blocks after 1945 for decades had tremendous effects, both on the youth and their forms of socialisation and organisation. Until the end of the Perestroika in the late 1980s, the youth were a hard-fought group in the East and West and therefore received tremendous political attention as part of a system of competing ideologies. Under the increasing influence of mass culture, the manner in which young people spent their free time also changed. At the same time since the 1960s, young people established new forms of protests within international protest and peace movements (e. g. "Ostermarschbewegungen). Due to these new constellations the youth movement and the traditional political and denominational youth groups lost their attractivity. This work analyses what this meant for young people, youth groups, youth movements and youth cultures in both German states and therefore contributes to the German-German history.

This book presents pieces of evidence, which ? taken together ? lead to an argument that goes against the grain of the established Cold War narrative. The argument is that a ?long d‚tente? existed between East and West from the 1950s to the 1980s, that it existed and lasted for good (economic, national security, societal) reasons, and that it had a profound impact on the outcome of the conflict between East and West and the quintessentially peaceful framework in which this ?endgame? was played. New, Euro-centered narratives are offered, including both West and East European perspectives. These contributions point to critical inconsistencies and inherent problems in the traditional U.S. dominated narrative of the ?Victory in the Cold War.? The argument of a ?long d‚tente? does not need to replace the ruling American narrative. Rather, it can and needs to be augmented with European experiences and perceptions. After all, it was Europe ? its peoples, societies, and states ? that stood both at the ideological and military frontline of the conflict between East and West, and it was here that the struggle between liberalism and communism was eventually decided.

Stereotypical descriptions showcase West Germany as an "economic miracle" or cast it in the narrow terms of Cold War politics. Such depictions neglect how material hardship preceded success and how a fascist past and communist sibling complicated the country's image as a bastion of democracy. Even more disappointing, they brush over a rich and variegated cultural history. That history is told here by leading scholars of German history, literature, and film in what is destined to become the volume on postwar West German culture and society. In it, we read about the lives of real people--from German children fathered by black Occupation soldiers to communist activists, from surviving Jews to Turkish "guest" workers, from young hoodlums to middle-class mothers.
