Das deutsche Gesundheitssystem ist einem desolaten Zustand. Dieser hat sich über Jahrzehnte hinweg entwickelt, vor allem aufgrund der Unfähigkeit und dem mangelnden Willen der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Eliten zur Umsetzung von Veränderungen. Bedingt durch die Fehler der Ära Merkel und in verstärktem Maß der heutigen politischen Elite. Die Missstände werden jedoch unter den Teppich gekehrt und in der öffentlichen Diskussion von zunehmend korrumpierten Journalisten der öffentlichen Medien vertuscht oder verleugnet. Heute steht das deutsche Gesundheitswesen im internationalen Vergleich nur noch mittelmäßig dar. Am Beispiel des Gesundheitswesens wird deutlich, dass Deutschland einen Weg beschreitet, der zum Verlust von Versorgungsqualität, Wohlstand und Zukunftsperspektiven führen wird. Die Corona Krise der letzten drei Jahre hat die Defizite in allen Bereichen mehr als deutlich gemacht und wurde durch die Mängel in Organisation, Logistik, Koordination der personellen und materiellen Ressourcen sogar noch verschärft. Corona hat der deutschen Gesellschaft vor Augen geführt, dass sie auf Katastrophen - wie Corona es zweifelsfrei ist – nicht vorbereitet ist. Weder die Politik, noch das Gesundheitswesen, noch Presse und Medien waren in der Lage, angemessen mit dieser Krise umzugehen. Corona lässt Deutschland geschwächt zurück, die Bevölkerung zweifelt an der Kompetenz und Verantwortung der Handelnden. Die wirtschaftlichen und finanziellen Schäden sind für die Bürger und für Handel, Dienstleistung und Industrie enorm und münden in einem Rückgang der Leistungsfähigkeit Deutschlands. Diese derart geschwächte Gesellschaft muss nun weitere Krisen verkraften. Zunehmend verbreitet sich das Gefühl von Apathie, Misstrauen gegen die Eliten und Rückzug ins Private. Der tiefe Fall Deutschlands von einer ehemals führenden und international anerkannten Nation auf ein Niveau der Mittelmäßigkeit zeigt sich besonders am Beispiel des Gesundheitswesens. Eine kranke Gesellschaft kann nicht in der Lage sein, mit den aktuellen und kommenden Krisen fertig zu werden und sich international zu behaupten.

Marcel Reich-Ranicki is remarkable for both his unlikely life story and his brilliant career as the "pope of German letters." His sublimely written autobiography is at once a fascinating adventure tale, an unusual account of German-Jewish relations, a personal rumination on who's who in German culture, and a love letter to literature. Reich-Ranicki's life took him from middle-class childhood to wartime misery to the heights of intellectual celebrity. Born into a Jewish family in Poland in 1920, he moved to Berlin as a boy. There he discovered his passion for literature and began a complex affair with German culture. In 1938, his family was deported back to Poland, where German occupation forced him into the Warsaw Ghetto. As a member of the Jewish resistance, a translator for the Jewish Council, and a man who personally experienced the ghetto's inhumane conditions, Reich-Ranicki gained both a bird's-eye and ground-level view of Nazi barbarism. Written with subtlety and intelligence, his account of this episode is among the most compelling and dramatic ever recorded. He escaped with his wife and spent two years hiding in the cellar of Polish peasants—an incident later immortalized by Günter Grass. Over the past half century, the behavior of German voters has changed profoundly - at first rather gradually, but during the last decade at accelerated speed. Electoral decision-making has become much more volatile, rendering election outcomes less predictable. Party system fragmentation intensified sharply. The success of the AfD put an end to Germany's exceptionality as one of the few European countries without a strong right-wing populist party. Utilizing a wide range of data compiled by the German Longitudinal Election Study, the book examines changing voters' behavior in the context of changing parties, campaigns, and media during the period of its hitherto most dramatically increased fluidity at the 2009, 2013, and 2017 federal elections. Guided by the notions of realignment and dealignment the study addresses three questions: How did the turbulences that increasingly characterize German electoral politics come about? How did they in turn condition voters' decision-making? How were voters' attitudes and choices affected by situational factors that pertained to the specifics of particular elections? The Changing German Voter demonstrates how traditional cleavages lost their grip on voters and a new socio-cultural line of conflict became the dominant axis of party competition. A series of major crises, but also programmatic shifts of the established parties promoted this development. It led to a segmentation of the party system that pits the right-wing populist AfD against the traditional parties. The book also demonstrates the relevance of coalition preferences, candidate images as well as media and campaign effects for voters' attitudes, beliefs, and preferences.

For the past 140 years, Germany has been the central power in continental europe. Twenty-five years ago a new German state came into being. How much do we really understand this new Germany, and how do its people understand themselves? Neil MacGregor argues that, uniquely for any European country, no coherent, overarching narrative of Germany's history can be constructed, for in Germany both geography and history have always been unstable. Its frontiers have constantly shifted. Königsberg, home to the greatest German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, is now Kaliningrad, Russia; Strasbourg, in whose cathedral Wolfgang von Geothe, Germany's greatest writer, discovered the distinctiveness of his country's art and history, now lies within the borders of France. For most of the five hundred years covered by this book Germany has been composed of many separate political units, each with a distinct history. And any comfortable national story Germans might have told themselves before 1914 was destroyed by the events of the following thirty years. German history may be inherently fragmented, but it contains a large number of widely shared memories, awarenesses, and experiences; examining some of these is the purpose of this book.
