The German pavilion at the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale offers an overview of more than 35 contemporary architectural projects in Germany which have manifested in peripheral urban areas, suburban spaces and de-industrialized zones. The projects reveal the transformation and reactivation of banal everyday architecture--business parks, switching stations, water purification plants, and strictly coded and conventional housing types--to open up a new perception of the "deutschlandscape." Here, architectural norms are reworked and given a new aesthetic twist through ironic self-reflection. These built projects by a critical young generation of German architects reveal highly innovative use of new materials, generate suburban "plug-ins" (temporary and mobile architecture) and skillfully rework the familiar to create solutions for hitherto underrepresented yet vital areas on the urban fringe. Accompanying essays and interviews reveal the personal narratives behind the architecture. Contributions include: "urban therapist" Sonja Beeck on dealing with the psychological dimensions of shrinking cities in the former GDR; artist and urbanist Kai Vöckler on the German psychoscape; Omar Akbar of the Bauhaus Dessau on the wider implications of urban sprawl; Peter Cook on tuning suburbia; Angelika Fitz on strategic answers to restrictive building regulations; Peter Wilson on the marketing of place; and Rudolf Stegers on multi-layered meanings behind the architectural image.

Many people assume that eugenics all but disappeared with the fall of Nazism, but as this sweeping history demonstrates, the idea of better breeding had a wide and surprising reach in the United States throughout the twentieth century. With an original emphasis on the American West, Eugenic Nation brings to light many little-known facts—for example, that one-third of the involuntary sterilizations in this country occurred in California between 1909 and 1979—as it explores the influence of eugenics on phenomena as varied as race-based intelligence tests, school segregation, tropical medicine, the Border Patrol, and the environmental movement. Eugenic Nation begins in the 1900s, when influential California eugenicists molded an extensive agenda of better breeding for the rest of the country. The book traces hereditarian theories of sex and gender to the culture of conformity of the 1950s and moves to the 1960s, arguing that the liberation movements of that decade emerged in part as a challenge to policies and practices informed by eugenics.

Image, Text, Architecture brings a radical and detailed analysis of the modern and contemporary architectural media, addressing issues of architectural criticism, architectural photography and the role of journal editors. It covers examples as diverse as an article by British artist Paul Nash in The Architectural Review, 1940, an early project by French architects Lacaton & Vassal published in the journal 2G, 2001, and recent photography by Hisao Suzuki for the Spanish journal El Croquis. At the intersection of image and text the book also reveals the role of the utopian impulse within the architectural media, drawing on theories of utopian discourse from the work of the French semiotician and art theorist Louis Marin, and the American Marxist critic Fredric Jameson. Through this it builds a fresh theoretical approach to journal studies, revealing a hitherto unexplored dimension of "latent" or "unconscious" discourse within the media portrait of architecture. The purpose of this enquiry is to highlight moments where a different type of critical voice emerges on the architectural journal page, indicating the possibility of a more progressive engagement with the media as a platform for critical and speculative thinking about architecture, and to rethink the journals’ role within architectural history.
