Dans la suite du tome premier (« Pax Romana ») de son essai décliné en trilogie, Papa Cheikh Jimbira-Sakho s’évertue ici à appliquer le même exercice d’auscultation du triptyque « Violence - Terrorisme et Religion » sur la séquence des quelques sept à huit siècles consécutifs à l’épopée islamique lancée à La Mecque par le Prophète Mouhammad (spl), et qui trouva son apogée dans l’Espagne musulmane (Andalousie) avant de décliner avec la chute de Grenade. L’auteur commence par rappeler le contexte géopolitique prévalant à cette époque, marquée par la suprématie politique, économique et militaire de l'Empire byzantin. Outre les confrontations armées opposant l’empereur Héraclius Ier aux Perses de Chosroès II et ses successeurs, au plan religieux, ledit contexte était surtout marqué par des affrontements incessants entre Chrétiens et Juifs. Faisant du « califat » sa pierre de touche pour l’auscultation dudit triptyque sur cette longue séquence, l’auteur s’applique d’abord à éclaircir le sens de concepts-clefs (ex. « fitna ») et de néologismes (« calificides ») propres au vocabulaire de la théorie politique islamique, et renvoyant à la longue série de luttes de factions et de meurtres politiques qui affectèrent l’institution califale, symbole séculaire d’unité et de pérennité de la « Oumma » islamique. En illustration de la pérennité de cette institution du « califat », l’auteur invite le lecteur à suivre son voyage dans l’histoire de l’Islam, depuis l’ère des « Râchidoûn » (les quatre premiers califes, dits « les bien guidés ») jusqu’au califat ottoman, en passant par le califat omeyyade de Damas, le califat abbasside de Bagdad, le califat de Cordoue, sans oublier les péripéties du pouvoir islamique depuis les Seldjoukides, les Almoravides et les Almohades, les Ayyoubides et les Mongols, ainsi que les califats d’Afrique de l’ouest (califat de Sokoto, califat d’Hamdallahi du Macina, et califat tijâniyya de Sénégambie).
