Traditional methods of measuring sound absorption coefficient and sound transmission loss of a material are time consuming. To overcome this limitation, normal incidence sound absorption and transmission loss measurement technique was developed. Unfortunately the equipment required for this task is equally expensive. Hence efforts are taken to develop a cost-effective equipment for measuring normal incidence sound absorption coefficient and transmission loss. An impedance tube capable of measure absorption coefficient and transmission loss is designed and built under a budget of $1500 for educational institutes.

What is acoustics? What is noise? How is sound measured? How can the vehicle noise be reduced using sound package treatments? Pranab Saha answers these and more in Acoustical Materials. Acoustics is the science of sound, including its generation, propagation, and effect. Although the propulsion sources of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric motor-powered vehicles (EV) are different and therefore their propulsion noises are different, both types of vehicles have shared noise concerns: Tire and road noise Wind noise Vehicle noise and vibration issues have been there almost from the inception of vehicle manufacturing. The noise problem in a vehicle is very severe and is difficult to solve only by modifying the sources of noise and vibration. Sound package treatments address the noise and vibration issues along the path to reduce in-cabin noise. In Acoustical Materials, readers will grasp the science of reducing sound and vibration using sound absorbers, sound barriers, and vibration dampers. Sound provides information on the proper operation of the vehicle, but if unchecked, can detract from the consumer experience within the vehicle and create noise pollution outside the vehicle. Acoustical Materials provides essential information on the basics of sound, vehicle noise source, how these are measured, how vehicle owners perceive sound, and ultimately, how to solve noise problems in vehicles using sound package materials.

The acoustic impedance of a material describes its reflective and absorptive properties. Acoustic impedance may be measured in a wide variety of ways. This thesis describes the construction and testing of an acoustic impedance measurement tube which employs modem Fourier Transform techniques. Two methods are employed for acoustic impedance measurement using this apparatus. One technique uses a two-microphone continuous excitation method and the other uses a single microphone transient excitation method. Simple acoustic theory is used to derive equations for both methods. MATLAB computer programs are developed using these equations, to provide graphical results of acoustic impedance measurements over a frequency range for a given material, from raw data. A procedure is subsequently developed for using this apparatus using to make acoustic impedance measurements. The performance of this device is evaluated by making measurements utilizing both methods on three sample materials and also with the end of the tube open to the atmosphere (referred to as an open tube measurement). The open tube measurements are compared with theoretical values. The results using both approaches compared favorably with the open tube theoretical values. Additionally both approaches agreed reasonably well with each other for the three sample materials. Performance at frequencies below 500 Hz, however, yielded deficient results, indicating a need for development of a filter for better accuracy.

Foundations of Engineering Acoustics takes the reader on a journey from a qualitative introduction to the physical nature of sound, explained in terms of common experience, to mathematical models and analytical results which underlie the techniques applied by the engineering industry to improve the acoustic performance of their products. The book is distinguished by extensive descriptions and explanations of audio-frequency acoustic phenomena and their relevance to engineering, supported by a wealth of diagrams, and by a guide for teachers of tried and tested class demonstrations and laboratory-based experiments. Foundations of Engineering Acoustics is a textbook suitable for both senior undergraduate and postgraduate courses in mechanical, aerospace, marine, and possibly electrical and civil engineering schools at universities. It will be a valuable reference for academic teachers and researchers and will also assist Industrial Acoustic Group staff and Consultants. Comprehensive and up-to-date: broad coverage, many illustrations, questions, elaborated answers, references and a bibliography Introductory chapter on the importance of sound in technology and the role of the engineering acoustician Deals with the fundamental concepts, principles, theories and forms of mathematical representation, rather than methodology Frequent reference to practical applications and contemporary technology Emphasizes qualitative, physical introductions to each principal as an entrée to mathematical analysis for the less theoretically oriented readers and courses Provides a 'cook book' of demonstrations and laboratory-based experiments for teachers Useful for discussing acoustical problems with non-expert clients/managers because the descriptive sections are couched in largely non-technical language and any jargon is explained Draws on the vast pedagogic experience of the writer

This test method can be applied to measure sound absorption coefficients of absorptive materials at normal incidence, that is, 0°. It also can be used to determine specific impedance and admittance ratios. The properties measured with this test method are useful in basic research and product development of sound absorptive materials. Normal incidence sound absorption coefficients can be quite useful in certain situations where the material is placed within a small acoustical cavity close to a sound source, for example a closely-fitted machine enclosure. This test method allows one to compare relative values of sound absorption when it is impractical to procure large samples for accurate random-incidence measurements in a reverberation room. Estimates of the random incidence absorption coefficients can be obtained from normal impedance data for locally-reacting materials. Measurements described in this test method can be made with high precision, but these measurements may be misleading. Uncertainties of greater magnitude than those from the measurements may occur from other sources. Care should be exercised to sample nonuniform materials adequately

The ever-increasing demand for improved fuel-efficiency and weight reduction has resulted in increased focus on porous materials. Cellular porous materials offer designers a route towards improving structural properties while improving the structure functionality—such as increase thermal dissipation, fluid transport, and acoustic absorption. The acoustic properties of porous materials, the subject of this thesis, offer an ideal solution for reducing aircraft noise emanated from commercial turbofan engines. However, including such materials within engineering design requires an improved understanding of their acoustic properties and the dependence of these properties on the various transport parameters associated with porous materials. While these properties may be directly measured using lab instrumentation, such measurements are often time consuming and require significant investment. The recently developed inverse characterization technique which allows the calculation of acoustic transport properties from impedance tube measurements offers a cheaper and more efficient alternative to such direct methods. To this end, the focus of this thesis is to clarify the suitability of this method when applied to various porous materials. Here, we compare the direct measurement with predictions obtained using the commercial inverse characterization software FOAMX, which uses impedance tube absorption data to inversely calculate acoustic transport properties using either the equivalent fluid model or the poroelastic model. The study compare the predictions obtained by both models and demonstrate the suitability of each method for various porous material. The results obtained show that the calculated material parameters can vary drastically depending on the method used and material model selected by the user. Further, the effect of the measured material properties on the predicted absorption behavior is compared with experimental results.
