This book examines the dilemma of overdependence on tourism in Caribbean countries and territories, and the need for a resilient path to address the industry’s vulnerability in the face of natural disasters. The chapters in the book question how tourism resilience is understood and practiced in Caribbean small island developing states (SIDS) and the factors that inform, undermine, or indeed redefine the sustainable resilience agenda for these territories. With its overreliance on tourism and vulnerability to climate, the Caribbean region finds itself susceptible and in need of an innovative approach in order to survive economically. Contributors to this volume touch on all three sustainability pillars and spanning across many tourism sector considerations, such as product development, stakeholder management, hotel management, marketing and entrepreneurship. By spanning the geography of the Anglophone and Spanish Caribbean this book offers a smorgasbord of conceptual and applied perspectives to researchers in the area of tourism resilience in SIDS. It also presents strategic considerations to public and private sector practitioners in implementing measures to strengthen the competitive positioning of their destinations as they contend with the dynamism of the external and internal environments.

Diasporas Development And Governance written by Abel Chikanda and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-12 with Social Science categories.

Drawing on examples from the global North and South, this book examines the relationship between migration, development and diaspora engagement from a governance perspective. It explores the ways that governments interact with their own extra-national diasporic populations in order to boost economic development, build global trading and investment networks, and increase their political leverage overseas. Inside, readers will find fifteen essays which highlight such issues as diaspora engagement by governments at different scales, the divisions that often exist within diaspora groups, diaspora transnationalism and return migration, diaspora knowledge networks and higher education capacity building, and the neglected issues of South-South migration and diasporas as well as North-South migration and diasporas. The book presents empirical case studies from various geographical contexts including Australia, Canada, the Philippines, India, the Caribbean, Zimbabwe, and the United States. Overall, this book presents fresh insights into how and why migrant-sending countries are increasingly turning to the diaspora option to attempt to benefit from the transfer of knowledge, skills and financial and social capital. It provides policy makers, researchers, and students with new perspectives on governance and the means by which states are attempting to utilize their diaspora resources.

Coastal Karst Landforms written by Michael J. Lace and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-28 with Science categories.

Carbonate rock coasts are found world-wide, from continental shorelines of the Adriatic Sea of Europe to the Yucatan Peninsula of North America, and on tropical islands from Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean, to the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, to the Bahama Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Such coasts are well known for their unusual and distinctive karst landforms. Karst processes, particularly those associated with coastal landforms, are proving to be surprisingly unique and complex. This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the processes associated with coastal karst development comparing examples from a broad geographical and geomorphological range of island and continental shoreline/paleoshoreline settings, including a review of pseudokarst processes that can compete with and overprint dynamic coastal karst landscapes. As effective management of hydrologic resources grows more complex, coastal caves and karst represent fundamental components in associated coastal aquifers, which in the rock record can also form significant petroleum reservoirs. Audience By providing a clearer understanding of the geological, biological, archaeological and cultural value of coastal caves and karst resources, this volume offers a critical tool to coastal researchers and geoscientists in related fields and to coastal land managers as it illustrates the diversity of coastal karst landforms, the unique processes which formed them, the diversity of resources they harbor and their relationship to coastal zone preservation strategies and the development of sustainable management approaches.

Towards Climate Action In The Caribbean Community written by Don Charles and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-05 with Business & Economics categories.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States, are among the first small island developing states (SIDS) to be affected by climate change. Each of the Member States emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. However, they are confronted with this global negative externality. After more than two decades of negotiations, in 2015, the international community agreed upon a new international treaty to address climate change: the Paris Agreement. A notable achievement of the Paris Climate Agreement is that it encourages climate change mitigation action in both developed and developing countries. Since the Paris Climate Agreement marks an important milestone in the international climate change negotiations, this book seeks to explore the policy climate change action which can be implemented by the CARICOM Member States to build their resilience in the post-Paris Climate Agreement Era. This books considers climate change issues facing the CARICOM Member States such as the National Determined Contributions (NDC) framework, the urgency for climate finance to facilitate the coastal adaptation to climate change, the need for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to simplify and standardise the financing framework for its various trust funds, and the moral obligation of the international community to develop a financial mechanism to address loss and damage from climate change.

Technology Adoption In The Caribbean Tourism Industry written by Andrew Spencer and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-31 with Business & Economics categories.

This book investigates the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Caribbean travel firms, particularly for sales and marketing purposes. By examining the decision-making process in tourism companies deciding whether to become more dependent on digital capabilities and artificial intelligence, this text seeks to understand the role of strategy and resources in technology adoption. Further, the author assesses the role of factors both external (such as culture) and internal (such as leadership) in this strategic process. Economies in the Caribbean are reliant on tourism to bring prosperity to the region, and with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry is being forced to transform the way it operates. With implications for those studying organizational behavior as well as strategic and tourism management, this study analyzes rapid change in this pivotal industry.
