This master thesis investigates the enabling of the new logistics strategy of Chocolat Frey AG (CF) by defining an optimized inbound logistics and dock management system. First, academic research is done which presents many problems and best practice approaches for an optimized solution. Second, a fact-based analysis shows the data and the challenges facing CF in its future state. A survey with participants drawn from CF logistics employees completes the definition of the main problems. The solution is based on developing a dock management system which includes the six categories “Planning, Information, Communication”, “Parking regulations”, “Efficient dock loading & unloading process”, “Social & Legal”, “Reduction of dock contacts” and “Continuous Improvement Process”. The key finding of the work is that the new solution has a positive impact on the targets of sustainability, supply chain collaboration and lean mindset. The results clearly show that apart from CF itself the freight forwarders and truck drivers in particular benefit from the new dock management system. In general, the thesis suggests many possible solutions. These ideas show how with a sustainable approach all stakeholders can benefit from an optimized inbound logistics and dock management system. Thus the thesis has a high relevance for all kinds of companies with dock operations.

Inbound logistics can be described as a process where large sets of raw materials from numerous vendors are transported to their designated factories to fulfill the production needs. Traditionally, more emphasis has been put on outbound logistics management. Inbound logistics share the same important role as the outbound one since it'll determine the raw material purchasing price from each vendor for the company. This work focuses on the inventory management and network distribution design part by measuring the new inventory holding policy and transportation strategy adopted for a food processing company in the Midwest. The current inventory management situation of the company is that too much safety inventory amount has been carried. Regarding to the inbound logistics, the raw material vendors seldom do the freight consolidation, as a result more trucks have to be dispatched to fulfill the production needs of the factories. First a normal distribution inventory consumption model will be introduced to calculate the optimal safety inventory amount in the inventory management part. Next in the transportation network design part, Gurobi linear optimization tool will be used to determine the best consolidation location for each particular material. A "Grouping method" based on different constraints will be adopted to transport goods from consolidation points to their designated factories. After the implementation of the new inventory management strategies, the new safety inventory amount has been dramatically cut down which will lead to a much lower inventory holding cost for the company. Also through the consolidation and grouping processes for the raw material, we are able to fully utilize the capacity of each truck and dramatically decrease the truck dispatching times to further lower the inbound transportation cost for the company. In this study, we are facing up to several new constraint like the goods with different temperature cannot be transported together which has seldom been done before. Also to treat either of the factories as a consolidation point is a feasible method to avoid extra transshipment point building cost. This study deals the inventory management and transportation design part separately. In the future study, we may try to integrate them into a single problem to further discover their interaction.

We often think of great battles as having been won by superior strategy, bravery, or weaponry. Often, however, the greatest battles are decided by a much more mundane factor: logistics. Delivering the Goods looks at business logistics through the history of successful military logistical operations undertaken by leaders from Alexander the Great to General Norman Schwarzkopf, and offers practical guidance on applying proven logistical principles to your business.

Developing And Implementing Standard Logistics Solutions For Eastman Kodak Company S Inbound Supply Chain written by Elaine Brooke Kahl and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with categories.

Eastman Kodak Company managed its supply chain operations at a regional level until 2002 when it created the Global Logistics group. Prior to this, there had not been much corporate focus on the inbound supply chain; in addition, Kodak lacked a standard process for the definition, selection, and implementation of inbound logistics solutions. As a result, inventory optimization occurred at a local level without insight into what was best for the corporation as a whole. This led to situations where material inventories were not managed effectively, implementations of inbound logistics methods varied widely across the corporation, and suboptimal inbound logistics solutions were created or selected. Ultimately these practices led to inefficient supply chain management and excessive inventory and operating costs for Kodak. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a set of standardized inbound logistics solutions for the company, create a decision tool that can be used to aid in the selection of the most appropriate solution, and implement this standard process across the corporation. This thesis is the result of work done during a 6.5 month LFM internship at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York.
