This book puts ideas on sustainable communities into a conceptual framework that will promote striking, transformational effects on decision-making. In this book practitioners and community leaders will find effective, comprehensive tools and resources at their finger-tips to facilitate sustainable community development (SCD). Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 3.0, University of Lusaka, language: English, abstract: The following work examines the effects of community participation as a determinant of project sustainability using the example of Zambia. Sustainability forms the basis for any developmental activity, without it all the efforts engaged in the project become a share waste of time and resources. It is a mystical theory to believe that affected communities are shocked and helpless to take responsibilities for their own survival and that their only hope is dependent upon external support. On the contrary, communities do have power and strength to manage and sustain their own challenges in any given case as long as they are involved in such a move that is aimed at curbing the community problems. That said community participatory approach is the most important slant towards enabling communities to help themselves and sustain efforts made by multiple developmental agencies. This study was aimed at investigating Community participation and its attributes as a determinant of project sustainability beyond donor support. The study was triggered by the eminent failure rates of many projects implemented in that collapse immediately the donor pulls out their support. The researcher applied and elucidated on different philosophical standpoints within this thesis in terms of ontology, epistemology and axiology were objectivism and positivism underpinnings were established. The researcher then used explanatory study design on the DFID Community Led Total Sanitation supported project in 29 districts of Zambia. Stratified and random sampling techniques were used to select a sample of 128 respondents. Furthermore, the researcher used questionnaires to collect data and it was analyzed quantitatively using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software and results were summarized and presented using table and charts. The findings of the study showed that an increase in community participation has a greater impact on the increased project sustainability beyond donor support. Hence Community participation is critical determinant of project sustainability beyond donor support. It is imperative to take cognizant of the fact that communities today should no longer be seen as recipients of development programmes; rather, they have become critical stakeholders that have an important role to play in the management of programmes and projects in their areas.

Books like this which bubble over with the fruits of many people experience and insight add new layers of meaning to (the concept if sustainable development) deepening our understanding of what for me is the most important political challenge of our age-by a very Long way... this timely and important book will be a real inspiration. ' from the foreword by JONATHON PORRITT Community and Sustainable Development is about the future - a future in which people have the resources to meet their needs. This basic message of sustainable development recognises the need to conserve environmental resources, but also to support and build the human resources through which the future will be realised, by ensuring that local people are able to participate in the decisions and activities which affect their living environment. Featuring contributions from many leading figures in the fields of community participation and sustainable development, this book shows how participation can extend democracy, citizenship and accountability. It also considers the role of science and expert knowledge in setting and achieving appropriate goals for development, and describes how participatory initiatives can inspire sustainable action on poverty and social inclusion. As the tourist industry becomes increasingly important to communities around the world, the need to develop tourism sustainably has also become a primary concern. This collection of international case-studies addresses this crucial issue by asking what local communities can contribute to sustainable tourism, and what sustainability can offer local communities. Individually these investigations present a wealth of original research and source material. Collectively the book illuminates the term 'community', the meaning of which, it is argued, is vital to understanding how sustainable tourism development can be implemented in practice.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economy - Environment economics, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (Arts and Social Sciences), language: English, abstract: The study serves to bring out a number of important issues under the discourse of community engagement. First, this study is key to informing policy debates on matters or issues of sustainability linkages, and it contributes as well to the present literature on the discourse around community engagement and program sustainability in Kenya. Secondly, of keen interest to the study is that it also seeks to explore and shed light on a myriad of areas that development actors on the continent could seize in a bid to improve the social-economic conditions of under-served and disadvantaged communities. This is in line with international obligations on effective community engagement for program sustainability. Community engagement plays a vital role in ensuring sustainability of outcome and has become a buzz terminology in the global sustainability discourse. When communities are effectively engaged on a particular initiative, the outcome leads to mutual benefits and durability. With the growing interest in engagement strategies for sustainable outcomes the researcher focuses his attention on community engagement in relation to water program sustainability. The study adopts a mixed research approach and collects data from participants through random sampling method using questionnaires administered by the help of enumerators and in-depth interview with key informants.
