"The primary purpose of the present study was to examine various aspects of local and global perception in groups of children and young adults with average ages of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 22 years. The aspects examined included developmental differences in RT for local and global visual information, the influence of filtering on global and local perception, and role of distracter congruency and compatibility on processing local and global stimuli. At a general level, the findings revealed that participants processed global faster than local stimuli. With the presence of distracters, 6 and 8-year-old participants demonstrated slower RTs for global targets relative to local targets. Distracter congruency or compatibility did not differentially affect global and local processing. However, congruency did appear to be related to differential performance for 6-year old males versus females. These results indicate that the underlying processes involved in global and local perception may be separate, with global perception relying on attentional mechanisms to a greater extent than local perception." --

"The developmental trajectories of selective and divided attention were examined in relation to the processing of hierarchically integrated stimuli. Items consisted of square, diamond, and circle forms made up of smaller squares, diamonds, and circles. Participants included 20 observers in 5 age groups (6, 8, 10, 12, and 24) who decided whether a square or diamond was presented on any given trial. In one set of trials, they were told to selectively attend (and respond) at only one level of analysis (global or local) whereas in the divided attention task, the target could appear at either level. This procedure allowed a unique comparison between selective and divided attention tasks using the same stimuli, task requirements, and instructions. Thus only the mental and attentional state of the observer was manipulated across tasks. In addition, for the divided attention task, observers were biased to one level of analysis. For both tasks and for the cross-task comparison, a clear and qualitative developmental shift was evident from six years of age to eight and ten years of age. The shift occurred in terms of selective attention, sensitivity to the probability of bias, and relative efficiency in processing global and local targets." --

The thesis investigated the development of children's global/local processing hierarchical patterns introduced by Navon (1977). The objectives were to understand more comprehensively the developmental characteristics of children's perception through their global and local processing of hierarchical patterns, by considering the effects of age, stimuli properties, duration of exposure to the stimuli and gender in a perceptual task and a drawing task. These effects were tested in 3 different populations: typically developing children, children with mental retardation and early blind children. The results revealed that typically developing children attended to both the local and global level of processing but these modes of spatial information processing operated independently. In a first step, children before 4 years of age showed dominance of local processing and then a more global processing developed at 4 years of age, and at 5 years of age integrated responses began to emerge. Early blind children showed similar developmental characteristics, although there was a protracted period of local processing dominance. Indeed, these children mainly produced local responses at ages of between 6 and 10 years, and then developed more global responses at 11-12 years and continued to integrate the two levels of analysis at later ages. On the other hand, global dominance was shown in children with mental retardation and their development was affected more by mental age than by chronological age. Moreover, their responses were shown to be sensitive to the fact that meaningful object could be located at the local level, enhancing local processing in this case. These results need further confirmations as the studies of global/local processing in atypical children are not numerous. In particular, the effect of duration of exposure to the stimuli should be further analyzed, because this factor did not seem to have a great effect in our experiments while it seemed more powerful in other studies carried out with adults. Replication of the study with children with mental retardation appears also important to plan for future work, because we can have some doubt relatively the absence of modification through ages of the way these children perceive hierarchical patterns. Finally, defining more precisely what may underlie the gender differences seems also worth to explore since gender did not show a major effect in our results.

"This thesis examines the development of visual perception in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with a specific focus on local and global processes. The current perceptual profile in ASD is characterized by a unique set of strengths and weaknesses in visual information processing at lower and higher-levels. These are generally described by strengths in processing lower-level, detailed information of a non-social nature and weaknesses in processing higher-level, global information of a social nature. Two issues limit the current understanding of this profile; a developmental perspective is lacking and associations across levels of lower- and higher-levels of processing are unclear. The studies presented here have charted, for the first time, cross-sectional developmental trajectories of lower- and higher-level visual perception for both social and non-social information. These studies were motivated by empirically driven questions and based on findings in adults with ASD, which have suggested that enhanced perception of detailed information occurs at lower-levels of processing (Kéïta, Guy, Berthiaume, Mottron, & Bertone, 2014) and may impact upon social perception at higher-levels (Morin et al., 2015). Participants with ASD and typically-developing (TD) comparisons aged 6 to 16 years completed behavioural tasks assessing lower- and higher-level, social and non-social visual perception, particularly in terms of local and global processing. These included spatial frequency, visuo-spatial (i.e., Navon task), and facial identity discrimination tasks. Results revealed that children and adolescents with ASD process local and global aspects of non-social information somewhat differently than TD comparisons at lower- and higher-levels (i.e., spatial frequency and Navon tasks). The strongest result was that local information interfered with the processing of global information in participants with ASD, specifically for higher-level, non-social information (i.e., Navon task). Moreover, the trajectories of local and global performances across levels of processing and type of information collectively indicated that adolescence is likely an important period of transition in visual perception in ASD. This was especially evident for lower-level, non-social and higher-level, social information (i.e., spatial frequency and face identity discrimination tasks, respectively).Associations across task performance provide preliminary evidence that enhanced processing of detailed information at lower-levels of processing influences non-social perception at higher-levels. Further to this, associations within higher-levels of processing suggest that the influence of local information may similarly interfere or distract with how social and non-social information is processed. These findings reveal complex relationships between local and global processes, suggesting that alterations in the "building blocks" of perception may relate to atypical, higher-order cognitive and social processes in ASD. These findings advance the notion that the atypical processing of sensory information may explain, in part, some of the social difficulties fundamental to ASD. They further highlight the importance of cross-level and cross-task comparisons of perceptual processes within a developmental framework, and support calls for a comprehensive understanding of how adult outcomes are achieved. Over the past three decades mounting evidence has suggested that infants’ social perceptual and social cognitive abilities are considerably richer than was once thought. By the end of the second year of life, infants discriminate faces along various social dimensions, attend to and understand others’ goals and intentions, use the emotions of others to guide their learning and behavior, attribute dispositional characteristics to other agents, and make basic social evaluations. What has also become clear is that there is a great deal of variability in infants’ social perception and cognition. A critical, outstanding question concerns the nature and meaning of such variability. The proposed Research Topic welcomes papers addressing cutting-edge questions regarding variability and individual differences in early social perception and social cognition. The goal of these papers is to investigate overarching questions in this domain, which are necessary to move the field forward. Variability in early social perception and social cognition (among other domains) in infancy and early childhood is often attributed to noise, or overlooked in favor of focusing on age-related changes. Yet, recent work suggests that variability in social perceptual and social cognitive tasks reliably inter-relates, and predicts real-world social behaviors. For example, infants’ everyday experience with different face categories predicts individual differences in face processing, infants’ production of goal-directed actions predicts their simultaneous understanding of these actions, and variability in social attention during the second year of life is related to theory of mind during the preschool years. These findings suggest that variability in performance on social perception and social cognition tasks is not merely a nuisance variable, but, rather, may provide the key to addressing significant questions regarding the nature of infants’ social perception and social cognition, and the processes that underlie developmental change. Acknowledging and closely examining and investigating variability in early social perceptual and social cognitive abilities may represent a powerful approach for understanding development in (at least) two ways. First, variability can signal transitional points in the developmental onset of a given ability. Thus, such variability, and the extent to which variability relates to experience and/or other abilities, can be used to test hypotheses regarding mechanisms that underlie developmental changes. Second, variability can represent more enduring individual differences between infants. In this case, critical questions arise regarding the source of individual differences (that is, what factors shape the emergence of individual differences?) and whether such early individual differences contribute to the development of more advanced and sophisticated forms of social cognition and behavior. The goal of this Research Topic will be to encourage researchers to take variability in early social perception and cognition seriously. Papers that give variability center stage, and are aimed at addressing the value of variability for identifying developmental mechanisms, as well as investigating the existence, source, and antecedents of early individual differences in social perception and social cognition are welcomed. Taken together, the contributed papers will provide integral new information to the study of social perception and social cognition over the first three years of life.
