South Devon in the Great War provides the first definitive history of events in this part of Devon during the First World War, with more than fifty pictures, some unpublished for 100 years. The author's succinct and engaging text is further enhanced by a unique set of then and now photographs, and provides readers with an incomparable pictorial overview of events on the Home Front To the casual observer, south Devon may have seemed an agricultural backwater of Britain during the war, important in but two respects; the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and the Royal Naval base at Devonport. However, a closer and more considered gaze reveals significant changes. By late 1915 many of the young men and, significantly, almost all of the horses had gone away to war. Older men and many women now farmed the land, aided by German POWs. Dartmoor Gaol became home to hundreds of Conscientious Objectors put to work on the quarries whilst large and medium sized country houses were converted to hospitals and convalescent homes. Not only does South Devon in the Great War detail these changes, it also explains how the local regiment responded to the call to arms of a whole nation. Within these pages the reader will find many personal tales of sacrifice, loss and grief. Most of all, however, readers will be ultimately uplifted by tales of the endurance of the human spirit.

This beautifully illustrated social history of Devon during the First World War examines the cultural changes brought about during this period. Every sector of society felt the impact of the war acutely. People pulled together in some things, and pulled apart in others. Men had to decide whether to enlist or not, and risk the social, moral and physical consequences of their decisions to be servicemen or remain civilians. Conscription, meanwhile, brought other keenly-felt social, political and personal issues to the surface. Thematically divided, this fascinating and timely study explores ...

This compact gift book takes thirty of World War II's most significant clashes, both the famous and the lesser known, and presents their stories in a concise, easy to digest format, accompanied by beautiful Osprey artwork plates in full colour that illuminate a key moment in each battle. World War II was the single greatest conflict the world has ever known, fought in theatres all around the globe, and many of its battles – Stalingrad, Monte Cassino, the Battle of Britain – are household names. While the Western Front in Europe is often what first comes to mind, bitter and bloody battles were also fought in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, on land, at sea, and in the air, and their many stories help illuminate both the scale and the varying character of the conflict.

Devon's colorful past may still be visible in its street names and pub signs, but in fact much of the region's history has been obliterated—through necessity, social change and the demands of the outside world. The traditional occupations of farming, fishing, pottery, copper and tin mining, wool production and quarrying and have all seen change over the past several hundred years. Many of these industries are now lost, replaced instead by ever-expanding tourism. Although many historic buildings have been preserved and are now protected properties, a large number of houses, ecclesiastical ruins and settlements such as Hope Cove, a coastal village once renowned for its tough fisherwomen, have tragically vanished. The county's coast is also peppered with ruined pillboxes manned by the Home Guard to watch for invaders—Devon has played a significant military role in the past, from acting as a mooring place for prison hulks in the Napoleonic wars to being the location of a training camp for spies in the Second World War. Superbly illustrated with photographs, paintings, maps and etchings from the country's museums and art collections, Lost Devon provides a fascinating insight into Devon's history, as Felicity Goodall explores what little remains of the past and discusses the events which have formed the county as it is today.
