ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Martín Hadis’ translation and notes, and Willis Barnstone’s remarkable photographs, build a sensitive portrait of that essential literary mystery known as Borges. In the final years of his life, Borges toured the United States participating in a series of dialogues organized by several of the most prestigious universities in the country: Chicago, Indiana, Columbia, Boston, Harvard, and MIT. The tour draws a disturbing cartography. Borges talks about the meaning of the universe with an astrophysicist, about mysticism with a kabbalah scholar, and about the blurry line separating reality from fiction with writers and poets. He attends a meeting at the Pen Club in New York City, and even gives Dick Cavett a TV interview. Throughout these encounters, the Argentine writer evokes dreams and nightmares, refers to Nordic sagas and Old English quotes, reflects on alterity, and comments on many of his favorite authors. The intellectual pleasure of these conversations also leads to the usually reserved Borges to reveal the meaning of symbols and plots in several of his works.

`Here is a handsome edition of one of Borges' ficciones, in a translation first published in Labyrinths in 1962. It's an important story in the Borges' canon, incorporating most of the author's philosophical and esthetic preoccupations in a typically brief compass. With great solemnity and a convincing array of scholarly detail (including annotated references to imaginary books and articles), Borges contocts a fable of an alternate world and its infiltration of our own. The reality of Tlon is idealist: material objects have no existence; language has no nouns; its principal discipline is psychology, since its inhabitants see the universe as nothing but a series of mental processes. A series of 24 illustrations accompanies the text. Their disturbing resemblances to our reality make them appropriate reflections of Borges's imaginative constructs.' -- The Kingston Whig-Standard

This remarkable book by one of the great writers of our time includes essays on a proposed universal language, a justification of suicide, a refutation of time, the nature of dreams, and the intricacies of linguistic forms. Borges comments on such literary figures as Pascal, Coleridge, Cervantes, Hawthorne, Whitman, Valéry, Wilde, Shaw, and Kafka. With extraordinary grace and erudition, he ranges in time, place, and subject from Omar Khayyam to Joseph Conrad, from ancient China to modern England, from world revolution to contemporary slang.

An obscure Argentine, after writing a few laconic stories on philosophical themes, is miraculously discovered by the French literati and goes on to become one of the most admired writers of the 20th century. Though this may sound like a rather improbable film plot, it is the story of Jorge Luis Borges, a story investigated in detail by Borges' close friend Emir Monegal. Professor Monegal, a Borges confidant for more than 30 years, has been able, as no one else possibly could, to unearth the facts from this legend that Borges has so deftly constructed around himself. The result is a narrative as intriguing as one of Borges' own stories of detection. Monegal traces Borges' development as a writer from its beginnings in the child called Georgie who lived in a rundown neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, learning to read English before he could read Spanish, to the winner of the most prestigious international literary prizes. He skillfully links Borges' personal history with his literary production, providing a fascinating account of the unfolding and eventual fruition of a creative genius.--From publisher description.

“Borges’s composed, carefully wrought, gnarled style is at once the means of his art and its object—his way of ordering and giving meaning to the bizarre and terrifying world he creates: it is a brilliant, burnished instrument, and it is quite adequate to the extreme demands his baroque imagination makes of it . . . . Absolutely and most vividly original.”—Saturday Review The seventeen pieces in Ficciones demonstrate the gargantuan powers of imagination, intelligence, and style of one of the greatest writers of this or any other century. Borges sends us on a journey into a compelling, bizarre, and profoundly resonant realm; we enter the fearful sphere of Pascal’s abyss, the surreal and literal labyrinth of books, and the iconography of eternal return. More playful and approachable than the fictions themselves are Borges’s Prologues, brief elucidations that offer the uninitiated a passageway into the whirlwind of Borges’s genius and mirror the precision and potency of his intellect and inventiveness, his piercing irony, his skepticism, and his obsession with fantasy. To enter the worlds in Ficciones is to enter the mind of Jorge Luis Borges, wherein lies Heaven, Hell, and everything in between.
