Assoluto. Incorreggibile. Fu solista nella scrittura, nel temperamento e nella vita. Fu solista rispetto alle ideologie e ai partiti politici. E persino il suo aspetto fisico, longilineo, anzi filiforme, lo distingueva sempre in ogni compagnia, anche nelle foto di gruppo. Svettava solitario, i suoi occhi sembravano due fari in cima a una torre di guardia. E da vero solista non ebbe veri eredi. Per i suoi detrattori, Indro non ebbe altra fedeltà, altro amore, che se stesso. Rifiutò ogni appartenenza, ogni famiglia, ogni chiesa. E fu sempre allergico alla censura; passò una parte della sua vita professionale a scansarla, e un'altra a fustigarla. Gli scritti qui proposti ne sono la prova. La censura è una camicia di forza, un letto di contenzione, e presuppone sempre di dover dar conto ad altri, un potere, una legge, una mentalità. Montanelli se la prende con la censura al cinema, in tv ma anche sui giornali, e con le sorelle infami della censura che penalizzano la realtà, la qualità, l'eccellenza: dalla spartizione dei partiti alla lottizzazione nella Rai e pure nei giornali, dalla pigrizia mentale del conformismo alla negazione della verità storica.
