Por la situación específica política y económica que ha pasado el país isla en el siglo XX, es irrefutable tener que preguntarse de que manera la comunidad cubana creció o decreció en el país norteamericano. Se ve a continuación un recuento de hechos históricos que crearon esta diáspora y las cualidades culturales que tiene: Se habla de diferentes olas migratorias de cubanos a los Estados Unidos. La primera sucede ya desde la lucha por la independencia en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, un número no menor de cubanos se dirigió al norte para trabajar en la industria de los cigarros habanos, pero no es hasta el año 1959 que la inmigración en masa sucede, año el cual las fuerzas dirigidas por Fidel Castro derrocan al dictador Batista e instauran un estado con carácter socialista. La razón principal desde este entonces y hasta el año 1980 en término de emigración desde el país isla se considera de carácter político; es decir en oposición al régimen de izquierda de Castro.
