Dalla Fastnet Race alla Coppa America e attraverso i grandi appuntamenti mondiali di questo sport, accanto a lui emerge infatti in queste pagine la figura di un comprimario finora poco conosciuto: Angelo Vianello, un marinaio veneziano che fu il suo confidente, serbandone i segreti personali e di famiglia e consigliandolo sulle strategie per perseguire la sua passione di velista. Il terzo protagonista di questo romanzo, così, è il mare, che fu l’habitat naturale di Gardini come si conviene a un condottiero con un animo di pirata; per questo la narrazione delle sue vicissitudini economiche e politiche procede in parallelo a quello delle sue grandi regate, senza che si possa dire quale delle due storie sia più avvincente, quale più tormentosa, quale più vera. Sulla parabola fatale di Gardini molto si è scritto: verità, menzogne, supposizioni. Questo romanzo fa parlare documenti inediti e un prezioso coro di testimoni per ricreare, con una penna intinta nella suspense, non una cronaca, ma una grande avventura. Un romanzo appassionante che ci trascina attraverso tempi tumultuosi nella storia di un uomo, di una famiglia e del Paese.
