Evangelism and diakonia belong together in the perspective of the Great Commission. Evangelism is sharing one's faith and conviction with other people and inviting them to discipleship. Diakonia is the gospel and our faith in action and is expressed through loving our neighbor. Evangelism and diakonia are like the two blades on a pair of scissors. They give the church identity and they are functions of the church. This is not just a matter of doing evangelism and diakonia in balance and alongside each other. Rather, evangelism and proclamation have social and diaconal consequences as we call p.

In a world of uncertainty, this volume advocates for a humble confidence in the reconciling work of the Community-of-Love. Yet further, by bringing together perspectives and experiences of Christians from across the theological and cultural spectrum, it models the reconciling power of the whole gospel and invites readers to share the good news.

The concept of diakonia has developed over the last decades, especially within the ecumenical movement, to a degree that may be characterized as a paradigm shift. Three main features characterize this change: First, the ecclesial dimension of diakonia is now strongly underlined. While diakonia earlier often was perceived as the activity of professional diaconal workers or agencies, it is now emphasized that diakonia belongs to the nature and the mission of being church. Second, it affirms that diaconal action must be holistic, taking into consideration the physical, mental, social and spiritual dimension, and rejecting practices that tend to departmentalize sectors of human reality. Third, it enhances bold and prophetic expressions of diaconal action, in solidarity with marginalized and suffering people, moving away from traditions of conceptualizing diakonia as humble service. The authors of this book largely subscribe to this understanding. The major part of them belongs to the faculty of Diakonhjemmet University College in Oslo. This book is a must-read for academicians, practitioners and leaders in the churches and theological institutions as it brings up new perspectives of diakonia in a changing global context. It is an ideal resource book for churches as they nurture and enhance their vision and commitment to diakonia, including critiquing their current approaches. From the foreword by Agnes Abuom, Moderator of the World Council of Churches In the Lutheran church we speak of prophetic diakonia. Prophetic diakonia works for the fruition of peace with justice and reconciliation based on forgiveness. We work to empower those in need to stand on their feet and become deacons in their own context. I adjure readers of this book to remember that holistic mission includes prophetic diakonia. Munib Younan, President of the Lutheran World Federation, Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land In a time when the churches together are searching for how to be a servant church in a rapidly changing world, this book is presenting a remarkable source for reflection and for studies. It is conveying new perspectives on the meaning and the liberating power of the diakonia of the church. For deacons and indeed for anybody called to serve in and for the church, this book provides new insights. The ecumenical movement as a joint move into the future needs books like this. Olav Fykse Tveit, General Secretary, World Council of Churches This book is highly welcomed by Norwegian Church Aid. It puts our core mandate - international diakonia - into a broader context, while firmly placing it at the center of the nature of the Church. The authors point to the unique qualities and distinctiveness of diakonia and the book is therefore a good reminder that diakonia can truly be a powerful driver of sustainable change. Anne-Marie Helland, General Secretary, Norwegian Church Aid Diaconal circles within European churches long ago expanded the narrow and introverted ideology, courageous as it was for its time, of the early 19th century founders of the modern deacon movements. This book evidences ongoing tensions in attempting to come to terms with the revolution that has occurred in the theological underpinning of diaconate, and is one of the first to make the attempt in the public arena. Diakonia In A Gender Perspective written by Stephanie Dietrich and has been published by Wipf and Stock this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-22 with Deacons categories.

Gender perspectives play a core role when it comes to both the theory and practice of diakonia. This is the second book on diakonia published by Regnum Books. It follows up Diakonia as Christian Social Practice: An Introduction (2014). Many of the authors belong to VID Specialized University in Norway (Campuses in Oslo, Stavanger and Bergen). They are concerned about the role gender plays within the theory and practice of diakonia. Most of them have experience as diaconal practitioners. The academic context of this publication is thus not gender studies per se, but an interdisciplinary approach where diaconal theory is deepened through the lenses of a gender perspective, and where examples and case studies are provided in order to exemplify the impact of a gender perspective on diaconal theory and practice. The book is a joint venture between VID, Digni and the publisher Regnum Books in Oxford. Diakonia has been identified with women and, tragically therefore, marginalised. In this stunning collection is trenchant critique of the diakonia implicated in imperialism and patriarchy, maintaining the very structures of domination that keep people in need. Here are some radically new models of diakonia that analyse and address gender issues, empowering women rather than 'helping' them. Here are stories from practice, of lives transformed and injustice truly named and contested. This is diakonia with attitude and power, not feminine but feminist, not weak but strong, striding in from the margins to challenge the centre. Susan Durber, World Council of Churches Faith and Order Moderator The authors analyse the role gender plays within the theory and practice of diakonia. This book shows in a convincing way how gender is an integral component of every aspect of the economic, social, religious, daily and private lives of individuals and societies. I warmly recommend this book which follows up the document Diakonia in Context: Transformation, Reconciliation, Empowerment, published by the Lutheran World Federation in 2010. The ecumenical world needs these perspectives. Martin Junge, Lutheran World Federation General Secretary This book is a powerful gift to all people whose hearts are moved by human suffering and who long to help build a more just and compassionate world. The editors artfully weave together social theory and theology in developing gender analysis as a tool for human liberation, empowerment, and healing. Readers will encounter sharp intellectual analysis of the role gender plays in determining access to power and the resources needed for wholeness of life, and will gain invaluable tools for the practice of diakonia. Engaging this text, practitioners of diakonia and of Christian faith will become more apt in heeding the call to ""love thy neighbor"" in a complex world that is shaped by gender inequity and is hungering for abundant life for all. Cynthia D. Moe-Lobeda, Professor of Theological and Social Ethics, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union Berkeley Stephanie Dietrich is Professor at VID Specialized University in Norway. Knud Jorgensen is Adjunct Professor at the MF Norwegian School of Theology. Kari Karsrud Korslien is Assistant Professor at VID Specialized University in Norway. Kjell Nordstokke is Professor Emeritus at Diakonhjemmet University College (now VID).

Diakonia, widely understood as the ministry of care and solidarity with people who suffer and are marginalized, has been given renewed attention by the church. As a theological term, diakonia can stimulate reflection on why the church is involved in such action and how the action might be carried out. This book, reflecting on various Lutheran practices, illustrates the rich variety of diaconal practices in the different regions of the world. The aim of these reflections is to seek a common platform for acting together, sharing the understanding that diakonia is an integral part of being a church in mission.
