Christlich motivierte Hilfsorganisationen in den USA sind feste Partner des Staates und tragen maßgeblich zur Ausgestaltung des Sozialwesens bei. Zu den wichtigsten Wohlfahrtsakteuren zählen die sozialen Hilfeeinrichtungen der lutherischen Kirche: The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) und Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Das "social ministry", das häufig von deutschen Einwanderern initiiert wurde, existierte schon lange, bevor es den Wohlfahrtsstaat gab. Die Organisation Lutheran Services in America (LSA) hingegen besteht erst seit 1997. Die beiden größten lutherischen Kirchen hatten die Gründung eines nationalen Verbundes vorangetrieben. Das Gesamtnetzwerk erwirtschaftete seither Werte von über 20 Milliarden US-Dollar im Jahr und zählt damit zu den größten sozialen Dienstleistern mit religiösem Profil. Wie es zu dieser Erfolgsgeschichte kam und inwiefern es LSA (noch) gelingt, sein genuin lutherisches Profil zu wahren, wird in diesem Buch kenntnisreich untersucht. Diese Veröffentlichung wurde als Dissertation im Jahr 2017 unter dem Titel "Die Entwicklung des US-amerikanischen lutherischen social ministry von freien Initiativen zur nationalen Verbandsstruktur von Lutheran Services in America" im Fach Diakoniewissenschaft an der Fakultät für Verhaltens- und Empirische Kulturwissenschaften der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg angenommen. Social Ministry in the Lutheran Churches of the USA] Christian social service organizations have been stable providers of welfare services and partners of the government in the United States of America. They play an immense role in the welfare system. Among the most important participants in this system are the social service organizations of two Lutheran churches: The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Their social ministries began as smaller grassroots initiatives, many founded by German immigrants, long before the welfare state existed. These ministries, however, have only recently been systematically united on a national level in the form of Lutheran Services in America (LSA). In 1997, the two church bodies established an alliance. Since its founding the network has generated a combined revenue of over 20 billion US-Dollars per year, and thus belongs to the largest networks of religious social service organizations active in the welfare system in the U.S. How LSA became such a success story and how it (still) succeeds in maintaining their genuine Lutheran profile is analyzed in this volume.

Studies on the History of Diakonia] What is the connection between inner mission, popular mission and diaconal science? The author highlights impulses and effects of Johann Hinrich Wichern in these three areas and thus builds a bridge between the history of diakonia in the 19th and 20th centuries and the scientific discipline of diakonia. This is supplemented by biblical perspectives, historical classifications, and conceptual reflections on a theology of diakonia. Finally, practical consequences are drawn for the scientific reflection of diaconal action and in shaping a diaconal church under changing social conditions. Volker Herrmann died on November 22, 2021 at the age of 55. This book is both a commemoration and a legacy. Diakonia Studies closes the account on John N. Collins's 40 years of involvement in groundbreaking linguistic research and argumentation concerning the nature and functioning of Christian ministry. Dispute has swirled around the Greek term diakonia for 50 years. Once seen as enshrining the New Testament value of loving Christian service-what Jerome Murphy-O'Connor called "one of the dogmas of New Testament scholarship"-the word was exposed by Dieter Georgi in 1964 as arguably meaning something quite different. In 1974 John N. Collins published his first paper on the issue, pointing to inadequacies in Georgi's brief account. Then in 1990 Collins published his exhaustive semantic survey, Diakonia: Re-interpreting the Ancient Sources. His re-interpretation was variously hailed as "devastating," "provocative," "unfashionable," and "a scholarly avalanche whose conclusions are inescapable." Since then, the book has stood at the center of "the Collins-Debate." Meanwhile Collins's findings have been incorporated in the authoritative Danker Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament. Diakonia Studies examines, in a non-technical way (i.e., without appeal to particulars of Greek), the reasons why theologians need not only to review cherished readings of leading New Testament passages but also to reassess what some passages might really be saying about the nature and delivery of ministry. These third-millennium issues are the matter of the final papers in the volume, reminding churches of the ministry they have received and of their filed-away commitments to an ecumenically-charged ministry. Among the topics considered are ordained and lay ministries, the tension between office and charism, and prospects for deacons when a diakonia of loving service no longer defines their call.
