Pembahasan seni rupa Bali masa prasejarah dan masa Bali klasik tampaknya kurang mendapat porsi yang memadai. Buku ini hadir di hadapan pembaca budiman mencoba memberikan gambaran secara utuh tentang periodisasi seni rupa Bali dari zaman prasejarah, awal masuknya agama Hindu dan Buddha, zaman Bali klasik, zaman kolonial, pengaruh pelukis akademis di Bali, sikap perupa Bali menerima pengaruh luar. Seni rupa Bali pada masing-masing zaman tersebut menampilkan karakternya sendiri-sendiri. Seni rupa Bali masa prasejarah, awal masuknya agama Hindu dan Buddha, dan seni rupa masa klasik sarat mengandung makna simbolis berkaitan dengan keyakinan dan agama Hindu yang dianut masyarakat Bali pada waktu itu. Pada masa klasik, puri menjadi patron utama seni. Masa kolonial, seni rupa Bali mengalami perubahan revolusioner dari seni sebagai penyampai isi (pesan agama) menjadi seni yang menonjolkan ungkapan visual semata. Perubahan revolusioner itu terjadi tidak lepas dari peranan perupa akademis, baik dari Eropa, Jawa, maupun perupa Bali. Dalam menerima pengaruh dari luar, perupa Bali selalu menggunakan filter sehingga seni yang diciptakan masih menampilkan ciri khas lokal Bali. Dengan demikian, buku ini juga dapat dijadikan sebagai pegangan bagi guru-guru SMA dan SMK dalam mengajarkan materi pelajaran seni budaya, khususnya seni budaya Bali.
