I diari di Emanuele Artom sono composti di due parti distinte. La prima concerne il periodo che va dal 1° gennaio 1940 al 10 settembre 1943, ed è una fonte straordinaria di notizie sulla vita culturale torinese, sui processi sociali che prendono l’avvio tra la caduta di Mussolini, la firma dell’armistizio e l’inizio dell’occupazione tedesca. La seconda parte, che va dal novembre 1943 al 23 febbraio 1944, riguarda invece l’esperienza partigiana di Artom e offre una rappresentazione immediata e priva di retorica della vita delle bande, delle dinamiche sociali interne e dei contrasti politici e personali. La cronaca degli eventi che segnano la vita dei resistenti è in primo piano, ma intrecciate ad essa compaiono dense riflessioni sull’etica dei resistenti. Risulta evidente come per Artom il senso della lotta non stesse tanto e solo nello scontro armato, quanto nella possibilità di delineare una socialità e una moralità diverse, di trovare una linea di demarcazione di tipo etico che distinguesse fascisti e antifascisti. Sono questi gli elementi che fanno dei diari di Artom un documento di grande efficacia storiografica e li pongono fra le testimonianze più alte della moralità della Resistenza.
