Diario de la primera expedición de Cristóbal Colón en busca de una ruta a las Indias viajando hacia el Oeste, que partió de Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) el 3 de agosto de 1492, con las carabelas La Pinta y La Niña, y con la nao Santa María con una tripulación de unos 90 hombres.
Estuvo en las Islas Canarias hasta el 6 de septiembre, concretamente en La Gomera (visitando a Beatriz de Bobadilla y Ossorio, gobernadora de la isla) y en Gran Canaria, arreglando el timón de La Pinta y sustituyendo sus velas triangulares originales por unas cuadradas, lo que la convirtió en la carabela más rápida de la flotilla.
La expedición no resultó fácil para nadie y durante la misma hubo varios conatos de motines. Entre el 13 y el 17 de septiembre experimentaron el efecto de la declinación magnética. El 22 de septiembre envió Colón su carta de navegación a Pinzón. La noche del 6 al 7 de octubre se produce un intento de motín en la Santa María que fue sofocado con la ayuda de los Pinzón. Sin embargo entre el 9 de octubre y 10 de octubre el descontento se extiende al resto de la expedición, tomando los capitanes la determinación de que se volverían en el plazo de 3 días de no divisar tierra. El 12 de octubre, cuando la tripulación ya estaba inquieta por la larga travesía sin llegar a ninguna parte, el grumete Rodrigo de Triana dio el famoso grito de: \"¡tierra a la vista!\". Sobre este episodio también existe controversia entre los historiadores, ya que los reyes habían ofrecido 10.000 maravedís al primero que avistara tierra, sin embargo este premio lo recibió Colón quien, según su diario de a bordo, habría visto \"lumbre\" unas horas antes que Rodrigo de Triana. Llegaron a una isla llamada Guanahani, a la que rebautizó como «San Salvador», en el archipiélago de las Bahamas.
También desembarcó en la isla de Cuba y en La Española. En las orillas de ésta, el 25 de diciembre de 1492, se hundió la nao capitana, la Santa María. Sus restos fueron usados para construir el Fuerte de La Navidad, constituyendo así el primer asentamiento español en América.
Las dos carabelas, al mando de Colón, regresaron a España. En el viaje de regreso sufrieron una fuerte tempestad que hizo que las naves se separasen, llegando La Pinta en primer lugar a Bayona el día 1 de marzo de 1493 y La Niña hizo lo propio llegando el día 4 de marzo a Lisboa. El día 9 de marzo, Colón se entrevistó con el rey de Portugal para convencerle de que la expedición no interfería con sus propiedades atlánticas y después partió para Andalucía.
Finalmente, el 15 de marzo arribaron al puerto de Palos ambas naves con una diferencia de pocas horas una de otra. A los pocos días falleció Martín Alonso Pinzón, el principal socio de Colón en este viaje.
