Imperial Russia, is was said, had two capital cities because it had two identities: St. Petersburg was Russia's "window to Europe," whereas Moscow preserved the nation's proud historical traditions. Enlightened Metropolis challenges this myth by exploring how the tsarist regime actually tried to turn Moscow into a bridgehead of Europe in the heartland of Russia. Moscow in the eighteenth century was widely scorned as backward and "Asiatic." The tsars thought it a benighted place that endangered their state's internal security and their effort to make Russia European. Beginning with Catherine the Great, they sought to construct a new Moscow, with European buildings and institutions, a Westernized "middle estate", and a new cultural image as an enlightened metropolis. Drawing on the methodologies of urban, social, institutional, cultural, and intellectual history, Enlightened Metropolis asks: How was the urban environment - buildings, institutions, streets, smells - transformed in the nine decades from Catherine's accession to the death of Nicholas I? How were the lives of the inhabitants changed? Did a "middle estate" come into being? How similar was Moscow's modernization to that of Western cities, and how was it affected by the disastrous occupation by Napoleon? Lastly, how were Moscow and its people imagined by writers, artists, and social commentators in Russia and the West from the Enlightenment to the mid-nineteenth century?

Advice literature (etiquette manuals, guides to hygiene and house management, and treatises on upbringing) enjoyed massive popularity in Russia between the late eighteenth and the late twentieth centuries. It reflected changing attitudes to appropriate behaviour in private and public, to the acquisition of possessions, and not least to national identity (for many Russians, reading how-to books was seen as a way of 'learning how to be a Westerner'). Written or translated by members of the cultural elite trying to encourage what they saw as civilized behaviour, advice literature was also a conduit for changing views of mass readers and of their place in society. This important and engaging book is the first systematic exploration of this hitherto neglected genre of popular printed text. It examines the evolution of advice literature from the Enlightenment to the post-Soviet era, from translations of Fénelon and Madame de Lambert in the 1760s and of Samuel Smiles in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to tracts by Gogol and Tolstoi, Soviet pamphlets on 'how to be cultured', and post-Soviet guides to 'window treatments'. It draws on a huge range of sources - memoirs, 'novelised conduct books' such as Anna Karenina, parody advice literature, letters, and reviews - to examine the broader significance of how-to books, and their relationship with daily life (byt) as construct and as lived reality. The result is a book that not only makes a major contribution to the study of popular culture, but also throws an unexpected and revealing light on Russian history more broadly.

La suma de desilusiones y su trágico desencuentro con la sociedad criolla terminaron configurando a un prócer romántico del que acaso nunca tengamos la biografía definitiva. Así lo entiende Edgardo Mondolfi Gudat en estas "ocho contiendas", tan sesudas como entretenidas, con las que logra un riquísimo acercamiento a la inquietante seducción del genio mirandino.

Y el espectador feliz de películas en su mayoría clásicas, además del ciudadano que reflexiona −en ocasiones con mucha indignación− sobre la situación política española. Asoma asimismo la vida cotidiana, la convivencia en la casa de Beniarbeig con Paco, cuya salud merma día a día. Y los achaques propios: los vértigos, el insomnio, la angustia y finalmente la enfermedad. La última anotación es del 28 de junio, un mes y medio antes de fallecer: «Hace meses que estoy pensando lo peor, pero no tengo muchas ganas de vivir que digamos, y calculo que no es mal momento, antes de que empiecen las limitaciones de verdad, las dependencias ajenas. Lo que sea y cuando sea, con tal de que no resulte desagradable. Luego pienso en los animalitos, en mis perros y mis gatos, ¿qué hacer con ellos? ¿Dejarlos en manos de quién? Y no tengo tan claro que el momento sea tan bueno como me había dicho antes, y pienso que ojalá no sea lo que llevo meses imaginando».
