Son también años de incertidumbres personales: del abandono definitivo de su trabajo en la redacción de Sobremesa, que le da una nueva libertad; de amigos que fallecen; de fugaces encuentros sexuales, entre el deseo y la decrepitud, porque el cuerpo ya no es joven; de crecientes desengaños... Pero siguen muy vivos los entusiasmos de siempre: las películas clásicas, que traen momentos de felicidad, y las lecturas incansables, sagaces y variopintas: Montaigne, La Celestina, La Regenta, Baudelaire, los cuentos de Poe, la Suite francesa de Némirovsky, los diarios de Jünger, Ellroy... Y también los viajes a varias ciudades: Nueva York, Berlín, París, Barcelona... Siempre en guardia, siempre implacable consigo mismo y con los demás –hay aquí, por ejemplo, un severo retrato de Juan Goytisolo, con el que se reencuentra en Berlín–, siempre escabulléndose de los cenáculos literarios, de los lugares comunes y de la banalidad, expresa opiniones contundentes contra lo que llama despectivamente «literatura de alta expresión», cargada de guiños y referentes literarios, y contra no pocos escritores actuales, a los que lee con displicencia y a veces con indignación. Sin embargo, el Chirbes demoledor en sus juicios se complementa con el irónico desencantado capaz de entender las debilidades humanas, y con el escritor lleno de dudas sobre su tarea literaria: «Escribir no cura, no alivia, no saca de esa niebla, de esa rebaba que es la vida. (...) Un escritor. No el que se pasa la vida entre palabras, sino el que se pasa la vida buscando atrapar algo que está a la vez dentro y fuera de él y solo se deja atrapar mediante palabras: no, no es exacto, las palabras no lo atrapan, sino que lo revelan.»

Los diarios de Rafael Chirbes: un documento imprescindible para comprender los entresijos de un gran escritor. Poco después del fallecimiento de Rafael Chirbes en 2015 apareció un primer libro póstumo indispensable: la novela Paris-Austerlitz. Ahora, seis años después de su muerte, el lector tiene en las manos sus diarios, que el autor revisó y preparó para su publicación. Son anotaciones recogidas en diversos cuadernos que cubren el periodo que va desde 1985 hasta 2005, es decir, desde sus inicios como escritor, antes de publicar su primera novela –Mimoun, finalista del Premio Herralde en 1988–, hasta poco antes de su ya inapelable consagración internacional con Crematorio. Estos diarios son el autorretrato sin máscaras de un ser humano –sus dudas, flaquezas, miedos, enfermedades, enterezas, ambiciones, anhelos– y una sucesión de opiniones y vivencias relacionadas con la política, el sexo, la música, el cine y la literatura; reflexiones sobre lo que Chirbes amaba o detestaba, siempre de forma apasionada. Pero también ofrecen un privilegiado acercamiento a lo que podríamos llamar la cocina del escritor: Chirbes anota sus análisis –lúcidos y contundentes– sobre libros ajenos (entre ellos, unos diarios: los de Musil) y deja constancia de los entresijos de la creación de su propia obra, las dudas, las búsquedas estilísticas, su modo de mirar y retratar la realidad... Y asoman también los peajes de la «vida de escritor», por ejemplo en el relato de un viaje promocional por Alemania en 2004, repleto de anécdotas a veces desoladoras y en otras ocasiones grotescamente disparatadas.
