Ibrahim came to the U.S., from Nigeria, on August 29, 2000 to pursue higher learning. He perceived America as a place where he could seek greener pastures and acquire opportunities that his home country could not have offered him at the time. His ideas of the American high-life are abruptly contrasted with the harsh realities that he encountered on a daily basis. Everyday became a bitter struggle as he had to chillingly accept the realization of instant independence, and the culture shock being away from the surroundings of his familiar homeland and family. In this emotional story, Ibrahim has remarkably captured the tribulations that he experienced during his first year living in the U.S. Diary of an Immigrant is a powerful, revealing, but yet humorous compilation of his quest and pursuit of the American dream.

The history of the United States in large part is the history of immigration, an immigration of working class peoples. Usually documented by sociologists, economists and other social scientists, the history becomes sanitized, devoid of the sweat, toil, and tears that make up the stories of real people. Here is an authentic, unexpected document from the very hands of a laborer whose trials have been even more burdensome due to his illegal status. Diary of an Undocumented Immigrant, the first book by RamÑn ñTianguisî P?rez, is written in a style that makes the stories of P?rez and his compatriots even more poignant, more touching, and more absurd given the nature of American politics and immigration policy. This is the true story„not the type of sensational report one might find in the news media„of an undocumented immigrant worker. Here is his odyssey through the United States, his endless trail of menial jobs, his indignities, his humor and his optimism. Perhaps this will shed light on the often obscured experiences of the intelligent, persevering, hard-working human beings we take for granted as they wait our tables, clean our houses, and pick our fruits and vegetables. This is their story.

This is the diary of a ten-year-old child who emigrated from England to New Zealand circa 1950. Her entries begin just before Christmas in the Northern hemisphere, and end with summer in the Southern Hemisphere. From a child’s point of view, this was an adventure with many possibilities. For the parents, it was an act of great courage as they gathered their five children (the baby only three months old) for a complete change in their future, with only sixty pounds sterling left to forge a new life. Their ‘Englishness’ made them appear and sound different, even though a Levin newspaper headline of the time read “Jo is happy here.” But in truth, there were mixed feelings about some of the new arrangements, starting with more than a year living in a caravan, a garden shed and an Army hut. After World War II there was a depression in England and a shortage of human skills in New Zealand. The British government offered ‘assisted passage’ schemes to families who could not otherwise afford to immigrate. The culture shock for the author’s family required considerable adjustments to adapt to a different way of life and a very different schooling system.

Never in history has mankind advanced so rapidly as in the past few decades. For the author, that advancement has been even more pronounced, as he progressed from being a lad lost in the wilderness of old-world farmlands and forests in India to the Director of Engineering in the most technologically advanced world of America. He saw sheer poverty, as well as the arrogance of the rich. Author kept a diary ever since he was a teenager. Maybe because it was fashionable in those days in India to communicate in English. He would write in poor, often laughable English; but he would write nonetheless. Who was going to read it except me, he thought. Those diaries and associated memories have been great companions over the years through thick or thin in his life's journey. Now so many years later, he has taken some of those writings and arranged them under different headings in this book. The book is divided into 42 stand-alone posts. It contains intermingled components of social, paranormal/spiritual, and professional experiences. The book is not intended to belittle anybody or any institution, but to reveal the realities of his everyday personal and professional life. This book is not about the author, but about his experiences. The purpose of this book is three-fold, which is projected through the lessons and outcomes of his personal experiences. First, through the social experience of life, he outlines that arrogance does not get anyone anywhere. It might make one temporarily happy, but in the end, it does more harm to the vessel it is kept in. It corrodes from the inside out, until the time when it is too late in life. Arrogance seems to emerge from ego and anger deep inside. In short: be humble because humility pays! Secondly, just because one is somewhat educated in science, does not mean s/he understands many subtle phenomena in nature and life. Just calling those phenomena mystical or paranormal does not absolve anyone from the responsibility to truthfulness. One must acknowledge the existence of higher truth and knowledge. Finally, one must not follow anyone blindly, no matter how well educated or established s/he is. Everybody makes mistakes, and nobody knows everything!(1) The social aspect of the book talks about author's stay in America as well as growing years in India and a glimpse into a society gone by. There are real life examples and experiences of rude, ruthless, and unwarranted behavior by highly educated and qualified people. Yet, there are personal experiences of utter humility and helpfulness. (2) Some experiences in this book are paranormal. Through these writings, the author wants to contribute in his own small way to discourage the creation of an environment in the future where people would be ashamed to admit these paranormal phenomena. "Convincing" anybody is not a goal, but the author simply wants to present first-hand experiences that are beyond the reach of physical science today. (3) The professional aspect of this book narrates examples revealing that everybody, no matter how well educated or established, makes silly mistakes costing millions of dollars. Only if one can learn and avoid repeating them can these mistakes be beneficial for personal and institutional progress. Examples in book show that common sense is not all that common even in professional circles! Even people in high positions lack common sense and basic understanding of engineering. The author has tried to be truthful and honest without hurting feelings. Where necessary, he has tried to keep the identities of individuals and organizations confidential. Of course, these experiences and encounters that he has narrated in the book are not in their entirety. Nevertheless, it is his sincere hope that some readers can discern a lesson or two, and place themselves on better footings in spiritual, social, or professional settings.
