Excerpt from Diary of Ephraim Shelby Dodd: Member of Company D Terry's Texas Rangers; December 4, 1862 January 1, 1864 In January, 1914, the State Librarian received a letter from a resident of New York State, informing him that she had in her possession a diary found on the body 'of a Texas Ranger hung as a spy. Negotiations for its acquisition by the State Library were opened at once, and terminated successfully. The only information about the diary this person could give was that it was found by a lieutenant from a N. H. Regiment, who for years was a friend of our family, and some time before his death (which occurred six years ago) he gave it to me. The Texas Rangers-the renowned cavalry of the Confederacy in the west This special Leonaur edition contains four fascinating accounts of the American Civil War as it was fought by the southern men of the 8th Texas Cavalry, known as Terry's Texas Rangers. This volunteer regiment was assembled by Benjamin Terry in the late summer of 1861. Each man was required to provide his own weapons and equipment-the army supplied his horse. Though elected colonel, Terry's career was soon terminated when he was killed at Woodsonville, Kentucky in September of 1861. The Rangers went on to fight at Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign and as raiders under Nathan Bedford Forrest. They also formed part of Johnston's force in the attempt to slow Sherman's march to the sea. It is believed that Terry's Texas Rangers delivered the last charge of the Army of Tennessee at Bentonville in 1865. Notably, the regiment never formally surrendered to the Union and following the collapse of the Southern cause its men simply slipped homewards individually or in small groups. The troopers of this very experienced cavalry regiment became renowned as 'shock troops' and were considered collectively the finest mounted regiment in the western theatre of the war. These first- hand perspectives and an historical overview offer essential and comprehensive reading for all students of the American Civil War. The Civil War Veteran presents a profound but often troubling story of the postwar experiences of Union and Confederate Civil War veterans. Most ex-soldiers and their neighbors readjusted smoothly. However, many arrived home with or developed serious problems; poverty, drug and alcohol addiction, and other manifestations of post traumatic stress syndrome, such as flashbacks and paranoia, plagued these veterans. Black veterans in particular suffered a particularly cruel fate: they fought with distinction and for their freedom, but postwar racism obliterated recognition of their wartime contributions. Despite these hardships, veterans found some help from federal and state governments, through the establishment of a national pension system and soldiers' homes. Yet veterans did not passively accept this assistance—some influenced and created policy in public office, while others joined together in veterans’ organizations such as the Grand Army of the Republic to fight for their rights and to shape the collective memory of the Civil War.
