Diary Rara Menulis adalah aktivitas yang membutuhkan ketelatenan, kreativitas, komitmen, kedisiplinan dan kesabaran. Mungkin karena itulah, sehingga tidak semua orang senang dengan keterampilan yang satu ini. Tak terkecuali anak-anak. Meskipun sudah banyak penulis cilik, tetapi persentasenya tidak menyebar ke seluruh daerah di Indonesia, termasuk di Sulawesi Barat. Penulis cilik Sulawesi Barat masih bisa dihitung jari. Salah satunya adalah Dzakirah Ananta. Siswa kelas VII SMPIT Wildan Mamuju ini salah satu anak dengan keinginan kuat untuk mengasah bakat menulisnya. Sejak di sekolah dasar, ia sudah rutin menuliskan pengalaman-pengalamannya. Mungkin karena ketelatenannya inilah sehingga tak sulit baginya merangkai kata menjadi kalimat dan paragraf yang nikmat dibaca. Hasrat menulisnya yang tinggi didukung pula oleh hobi membaca dan tentu saja dorongan dari orang tua. Kegemarannya membaca tergambar dari untaian kalimat dalam tulisannya yang sudah mahir menggunakan kalimat-kalimat kompleks. Ia tidak menggunakan bahasa anak-anak dan kalimat sederhana. Hal ini sedikit menyulitkan editor, harus menyesuaikan kalimat yang digunakan dengan usia anak sebagai sasaran pembaca karyanya. Namun ini sekaligus menjadi penegas bahwa seperti apa tulisan kita sangat tergantung bagaimana bahan bacaan kita. Rara termasuk anak yang rajin membaca buku apa saja. Kumpulan tulisan berisi sebelas buah cerpen ini secara umum mengambil ide dari kesehariannya, maupun kejadian-kejadian dan pengalaman berkesan yang dialaminya. Dengan lugas gadis kecil kelahiran 16 Maret 2007 ini meramu idenya dalam cerita menarik. Menariknya, cerpen-cerpen yang ditulisnya beraneka ‘rasa’, ada bahagia, sedih dan lucu, sehingga pembaca dijamin tidak akan bosan menguliti cerita demi cerita. Sebutlah cerpen pertama di buku ini, Asyiknya Bermain Air. Ia menceritakan secara detail pengalaman serunya saat berlibur bersama keluarga di sebuah destinasi wisata di Polewali Mandar. Atau cerpen yang berkisah tentang kepindahan salah satu sahabatnya di sekolah. Dengan bahasa yang apa adanya, tetap mampu mengaduk-aduk hati pembaca untuk larut dalam kesedihan yang dialami para tokoh. Rasa yang sama ditemukan dalam cerpen Perpisahan itu Menyakitkan yang berkisah tentang acara penamatan sekolahnya. Keceriaan, kelucuan sekaligus ketegangan ditampilkan dalam cerpen Porseni Sekolah. Rentetan kejadian dalam lomba antar kelas tersebut dengan bahasa yang runut dan kronologi yang jelas. Kepiawaiannya merangkai kalimat kompleks dan menceritakan suasana juga tergambar dalam cerita pendek My Trip, My Adevnture to Mamasa. Secara keseluruhan, sebelas cerita dalam kumpulan cerpen ini mampu membawa alam imaji kita, seolah terseret ke dalam situasi yang dibangun Penulis. Mira Pasolong Editor

Captives in Blue, a study of Union prisoners in Confederate prisons, is a companion to Roger Pickenpaugh's earlier groundbreaking book Captives in Gray: The Civil War Prisons of the Union, rounding out his examination of Civil War prisoner of war facilities. In June of 1861, only a few weeks after the first shots at Fort Sumter ignited the Civil War, Union prisoners of war began to arrive in Southern prisons. One hundred and fifty years later Civil War prisons and the way prisoners of war were treated remain contentious topics. Partisans of each side continue to vilify the other for POW maltreatment. Roger Pickenpaugh's two studies of Civil War prisoners of war facilities complement one another and offer a thoughtful exploration of issues that captives taken from both sides of the Civil War faced. In Captives in Blue, Pickenpaugh tackles issues such as the ways the Confederate Army contended with the growing prison population, the variations in the policies and practices inthe different Confederate prison camps, the effects these policies and practices had on Union prisoners, and the logistics of prisoner exchanges. Digging further into prison policy and practices, Pickenpaugh explores conditions that arose from conscious government policy decisions and conditions that were the product of local officials or unique local situations. One issue unique to Captives in Blue is the way Confederate prisons and policies dealt with African American Union soldiers. Black soldiers held captive in Confederate prisons faced uncertain fates; many former slaves were returned to their former owners, while others were tortured in the camps. Drawing on prisoner diaries, Pickenpaugh provides compelling first-person accounts of life in prison camps often overlooked by scholars in the field.

In July 1864, Union General William T. Sherman ordered the arrest and deportation of more than 400 women and children from the villages of Roswell and New Manchester, Georgia. Branded as traitors for their work in the cotton mills that supplied much needed material to the Confederacy, these civilians were shipped to cities in the North (already crowded with refugees) and left to fend for themselves. This work details the little known story of the hardships these women and children endured before and--most especially--after they were forcibly taken from their homes. Beginning with the founding of Roswell, it examines the pre-Civil War circumstances that created this class of women. The main focus is on what befell the women at the hands of Sherman's army and what they faced once they reached such states as Illinois and Indiana. An appendix details the roll of political prisoners from Sweetwater (New Manchester).
