Brazilia Oliveira de Lacerda nasceu um ano antes da abolição da escravatura. Bisneta de visconde (do Rio Claro), neta de barão (de Arary) e nora de conde (do Pinhal), foi não apenas uma legítima representante da elite agrária paulista, mas também, revela-se agora, uma de suas raras cronistas. Quando morreu, em 1966, aos 79 anos, deixou na gaveta diversas recordações de vida, preservadas em pequenos cadernos pautados, preenchidos de próprio punho. Os manuscritos presentes nesta edição cobrem treze desses anos. O primeiro caderno tem como ponto de partida a chegada da família à fazenda Paraizo, em São Carlos do Pinhal, e retraça as experiências vividas por Brazilia dos seis aos dez anos. O segundo caderno vai até seu 16.o aniversário. O terceiro tem início no dia em que Brazilia completa dezessete anos, em 24 de maio de 1904, e termina logo depois de seu casamento com o primo Carlos Amadeu de Arruda Botelho, ocorrido cerca de dois anos mais tarde. Os principais cenários de suas recordações são a fazenda Paraizo, onde vivia com seus pais e irmãos, e São Paulo, onde a família passava dois meses por ano na casa que mantinham na capital. Nos dois cenários, sobressaem costumes ditados pela tradição e pela temporalidade dos cafezais. Com seu olhar atento e minucioso, Brazilia recorda as brincadeiras com os irmãos e primos, as aulas em casa com preceptoras europeias, a relação com os empregados da fazenda, as festas no terreiro, as receitas de doces, a lida diária nos cafezais, o trabalho de costura e de contabilidade da fazenda, as touradas na praça da República e o convívio com a alta sociedade paulistana nas temporadas na capital. Com descrições pormenorizadas do cotidiano, os registros aqui publicados reforçam a dimensão histórica da economia cafeeira na transição do século XIX para o século XX e jogam luz sobre a atuação feminina em domínios historicamente tratados como exclusivos dos “barões do café”. Preparada para desempenhar o único papel que cabia às mulheres da época, Brazilia terminou legando para a posteridade um ponto precioso para entender a história do Brasil.
