This edited volume advances our understanding of urban activism beyond the social movement theorization dominated by thesis of political opportunity structure and resource mobilization, as well as by research based on experience from the global north. Covering a diversity of urban actions from a broad range of countries in both hemispheres as well as the global north and global south, this unique collection notably focuses on non-institutionalised or localised urban actions that have the potential to bring about radical structural transformation of the urban system and also addresses actions in authoritarian regimes that are too sensitive to call themselves “movement”. It addresses localized issues cut off from international movements such as collective consumption issues, like clean water, basic shelter, actions against displacement or proper venues for street vendors, and argues that the integration of the actions in cities in the global south with the specificity of their local social and political environment is as pivotal as their connection with global movement networks or international NGOs. Building on the growing field of Afropean Studies, this interdisciplinary and intermedial collection of essays proposes a dialogue on Afro-Spanishness that is not exclusively tied to immigration and that understands Blackness as a non-essentialist, heterogeneous and diasporic concept. Studying a variety of twentieth- and twenty-first-century cultural products, some essays explore the resilience of the colonialist paradigms and the circulation of racial ideologies and colonial memories that promote national narratives of whitening. El 15M ha sido el movimiento social que mayor entusiasmo ha generado en España en lo que va de siglo. Para encontrar un fenómeno comparable en trascendencia seguramente tendríamos que remontarnos a los años de la Transición, y a su especial contexto. La crisis financiera mundial de 2008, que afectó de manera dramática a tantas personas que se quedaron sin trabajo, sin hogar o sin futuro, sirvió como detonante de la protesta. El sistema tiraba tanto de la cuerda que el desafío llegó de forma inesperada, cogiendo por sorpresa a los profesionales de la política.
