El Diccionario del español ecuatoriano pretende reflejar la realidad lingüística del país y cifrar la memoria de una lengua rica en variaciones y complejidades. El trabajo vasto de prefijar los elementos léxicos del español hablado en Ecuador no pretende propagar nuevas normas lingüísticas sino describir el paisaje actual al que las palabras han llegado luego de años de fragua en la colectividad de un país, como si se tratase de un retrato de sus gentes y de sus lugares habituales. El presente diccionario es de naturaleza contrastiva, las diez mil quinientas palabras que han sido descritas en sus páginas tienen connotaciones diversas o no se conocen en España, según palabras del propio Fernando Miño-Garcés, que ha invertido 32 años en la edificación minuciosa de esta obra lexicográfica. El retrato lingüístico de un habla ha de estar exento de criterios restrictivos que sesguen la veracidad de su intención descriptiva e informativa. El Diccionario del español ecuatoriano está libre de inquisiciones de orden moral o culturalista y ningún uso lingüístico ha sido objeto de exclusión o estigmatización, de acuerdo con una tendencia fiel a los preceptos meramente descriptivos de la lexicografía.
