Este libro busca desentrañar esta y otras preguntas leyendo entre definiciones variopintas los discursos ideológicos, históricos y políticos y reflexionando sobre la naturaleza lingüística y normativa de los diccionarios. La profunda investigación y los diversos ejemplos mostrados, demuestran que existió una intención fundada para que estos diccionarios, con autores diversos: sacerdotes, políticos, periodistas, abogados, hispanoamericanos o no, conservadores o liberales, fueran la representación de una clara hegemonía cultural que trabajara en pos de una lengua estándar. A su vez, ilumina la relación que ha tenido una institución como la rae para normar acerca de esta lengua y su resistencia ante las variedades habladas en Hispanoamérica.
