The Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession is a unique index of visual artists from all over the world and throughout all ages. It provides the user with access to the Allgemeines Ku nstlerlexikon (AKL), which, on completion, will contain more than 500,000 biographies on artists and provide an overview of artistic activity. Several hundred artistic professions are included here, from architects to etchers, from sculptors to body-arts. The basis for the biographical entries are over 200 major international encyclopedia of artists with a total of some 500 volumes, whose data, including source references, are indexed by the Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession in a clearly structured manner, providing the user with an overview and easy access. The data has been supplemented with material from the published volumes of AKL, Thieme-Becker and Vollmer, and with additional details researched by the editorial staff. The index thus represents a biographical reference work in its own right. The index is structured by artistic professional groups (in English), within professional groups by country and within countries, in chronological order. The Bio-bibliographical Index by Profession thus also provides a chronological overview of the history of artists and the development of various art forms in individual countries. Italian Renaissance art is the main focus for this anthology of essays which analyse key episodes in the history of illustration from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Poderá parecer algo desconcertante ao leitor formado pelos ideais vanguardistas do modernismo brasileiro a constatação de que, talvez, um dos seus principais legados tenha sido a construção de visões mais ou menos estabilizadoras sobre o passado colonial. Em linhas gerais essa é uma das boas provocações deste excelente Passado presente. Usos contemporâneos do “passado colonial” brasileiro. Não será mera casualidade que uma historiadora das práticas culturais, como Andrea Daher, é quem nos faça essa provocação na concepção, organização e prefácio da coletânea. Suas pesquisas e orientações tratam justamente das relações entre oralidade e cultura escrita, relações fundantes do ofício de um tipo de historiador que, mesmo compartilhando o mito de fundação de sua tradição intelectual comum sobre o “pecado” do anacronismo, não se deixa intimidar ou seduzir demasiadamente por ele, fazendo, antes, do anacronismo, sua própria matéria-prima e prisma de reflexão. O presente volume volta-se para os usos de representações do “passado colonial”, tema sobre o qual a organizadora já nos legou livros decisivos, mas vistos agora em práticas e objetos culturais no Brasil dos fins dos séculos XIX e primeira metade do XX. Guardadas suas especificidades, a visão de conjunto oferecida pelos seis estudos, dentre outras contribuições, ajuda ainda a fazer repensar o movimento modernista num sentido mais lato, como um movimento cultural que também enlaça diferentes gerações na busca de mudanças culturais no conjunto da sociedade, e não apenas na renovação de distintos nichos estéticos, e que por isso mesmo não pôde se furtar a formalizar aspectos do legado histórico na sociedade em mudança. Sendo diversas aquelas “competências de representação do passado”, porém, são diferentes também os dispositivos textuais e de referências documentais e outras da narrativa histórica, como acentua a organizadora no prefácio. E nesse aspecto, talvez, o rendimento da abordagem comum adotada no livro parece mesmo atingir seu ponto alto, pois se o acontecimento vivido é finito, o lembrado é sem limites justamente porque põe aquele em perspectiva, sempre atualizando a presença de um passado distante no presente. Que o leitor fique atento também aos distintos sentidos do passado em cada uma daquelas competências é o meu convite. Afinal, a versão do passado é diferente, entre outras razões, também porque é diversa ou até mesmo desigual a visão sobre o lugar da tradição na explicação do presente. André Botelho
