This piece of work is intended as a contribution to the linguistic study of personal names throughout the Late Middle Ages in Galicia (Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula). After exploring several types of sources, non-literary edited documents ranging over a chronological period between the 8th and the 12th centuries were chosen. The compilation of data was carried out after reviewing the original documents in order to correct editing mistakes. The final result consisted of nearly 10000 onomastic sequences, including about 18000 subsequent occurrences. Then, research into the system of personal names and its evolution was initiated. Among the topics explored were the change from the use of a single name to the use of a second name, the creation of this second name by morphological procedures (patronymic suffix -iz, i.e. modern -ez) or through the use of bynames (nicknames, petnames and professional names), place names and ethnic names. This project also offers an etymological study of the data and a dictionary of proper names with more than 2000 entries.

O Dicionário do português arcaico ou medieval é o resultado de um longo período de investigação sobre o espólio documental do português arcaico, cuja concepção contou com o suporte teórico-metodológico da lexicografia histórico-variacional e da filologia tradicional. Os corpora utilizados mereceram edições conservadoras e confiáveis de textos manuscritos e impressos, produzidos entre os séculos XIII e XVI e a organização lexicográfica pautou-se no esteio dos trabalhos precedentes, de mesma autoria, publicados em 2013 e em 2014, sob os títulos de Pequeno vocabulário do português arcaico e Dicionário etimológico do português arcaico, publicados sob o selo de duas importantes editoras universitárias brasileiras, a Editora da Universidade de Brasília e a Editora da Universidade Federal da Bahia, respectivamente. A presente obra, com mais de 7000 verbetes, é uma celebração à variação e à mudança linguísticas, de uma período em que ainda não se havia fixado uma norma de escrita, fazendo com que o registro da língua permitisse revelar possíveis normas de fala em uso real na sociedade da época. Os verbetes atendem a um sistema de remissão bastante prolífico e eficiente e apresentam, para além de uma rede de lemas principais, secundários e múltiplos, a classificação gramatical, a etimologia ou processo morfológico de formação de todas as unidades - com o emprego de indicadores simples e facilmente identificáveis durante a consulta -, registrando, ademais, fartas abonações, em especial de formas dos verbos, com todas as pessoas em que se puderam identificar flexões nos corpora. Imagining Iberia in English and Castilian Medieval Romance offers a broad disciplinary, linguistic, and national focus by analyzing the literary depiction of Iberia in two European vernaculars that have rarely been studied together.
