Nas últimas décadas foron numerosas as propostas lexicográficas en lingua galega que saíron do prelo, moitas delas en forma de dicionario. Porén, un novo proxecto destas características debe cumprir, polo menos, dúas premisas fundamentais: por unha banda, debe seguir o ronsel dos mellores corpus publicados; e, pola outra, ten que se esforzar en achegar aspectos novos ou pouco traballados polos anteriores para non ser, simplemente, un dicionario máis. O Dicionario escolar da lingua galega segue as tendencias marcadas polos compendios académicos, pero tamén ten en conta o plasmado noutras compilacións de grande interese. Neste sentido, pretende ser unha peza máis no mosaico lexicográfico en galego. A maiores, realizouse un notable traballo en aspectos pouco ou nada considerados ata o de agora; por exemplo, os seguintes: -División silábica das entradas. -Principais rexencias preposicionais dos verbos. -Entradas problemáticas por forma ou por contido (neoloxismos, abreviaturas, expresións...). -Acepcións novas ou non recollidas con anterioridade. -Grandes "grupos semánticos" (profesións, xentilicios, latinismos...). -Fraseoloxía máis destacada do idioma. En síntese, unhas 30 000 voces definidas en 1 256 páxinas de texto, 120 000 sinónimos e milleiros de observacións ao pé da acepción, multitude de cadros ilustrativos de tipo gramatical e varios apéndices normativos. Esta combinación de tradición e modernidade pretende ofrecer un resultado útil e acorde cos destinatarios deste dicionario: os estudantes dos últimos cursos de Primaria e da ESO, que usan o galego como lingua de traballo, e que precisan aclarar formas e significados dos vocablos e das expresións desta lingua.
