The schools have an obligation and a duty to provide learning experiences for children that will develop in them, to the limit of their potential, those skills, attitudes, and values that will insure their continued education and happiness. The students of today must be prepared to accept their responsibilities as citizens of a problem-ridden, shrinking world of tomorrow. lt is vital that the curriculum be constructed in such a way that the student will be able to deal imaginatively with the problems he will face as an adult. Successful teaching recognizes that each student is an individual and must be respective as such. Discipline, which is necessary for character development, should be provided from without until a student has matured enough to internalize values and become self-disciplined. This is an evolving process. Talented teachers are keenly perceptive, sensitive, and enjoy being with children.They know that child-study is essential if they are to understand children.They have learned that a multitude of factors affect a child's success as a person.These valuable educators are only one influence in a student's total development and that they must understand the many other influences.They are thoroughly familiar with the community, its institutions and mores, and the child's home-life. It is the purpose of this study to ascertain whether the teaching techniques of the "Montessori Method" can be applied to the mentally retarded and whether the application of these techniques is the answer to the need for self-activity shown by children who belong in this category. The term "Self-Activity" will refer not only to the active use of the voluntary muscles, but to the spontaneous activities of the child, as a personalty. The question raised is a very important problem indeed, since its solution may affect the lives of innumerable children all over the world; therefore the writer believes that it deserves careful analysis and research. Furthermore, it would appear that the question is a very timely one, as the discussion about teaching methods in general has reached a state of great animation, and the problem of hour to deal with exceptional children("exceptional" taken in a positive as well as in a negative sense) is one of the most hotly debated issues of this controversy. The growing interest shown by educators as well as laymen in the Montessori method appears to indicate that this system does offer a set of valuable suggestions, and it was in the light of these circumstances that the present study was undertaken.

There is an implicit bias against didacticism in the arts. Through this examination of the term didactic(ism) and its negative connotation in art, I unpack its meanings loosely related to the levels of information, accessibility, directness and clarity within a work. I then examine our assumptions about the value of an artwork determined by these implicit biases. This thesis analyzes contemporary phobias around didacticism as the unspoken elephant in the room to contest assumptions, rules and stigmas in art/making/education. In this qualitative study, I contextualize the historic construction of didacticism in literature, language, usage and its role in contemporary art. Through a hybrid of textual and historical analysis combined with an autoethnographic approach, I examine how the context of didacticism, as understood and applied in art, plays a role in teaching art as a practice and art as a field of study in higher education. I question the negative implications of didacticism by recasting it as a fundamental aspect of art making, crucial for effective art education. Where does this attitude about didacticism in art come from? How did we get to our contemporary interpretation of didacticism in contemporary art practices? Through grounded theory my autoethnography begins with my role as an outsider, Arabic speaker, learning the term didactic for the first time in the U.S. As a dual international Master of Arts in Art Education and Master of Fine Arts student I explore the messy relationship being both participant-artist and observer-educator. The focus of my research was my experience of being educated as an artist and as an art educator simultaneously. My research data includes teaching observations, notes, pedagogical statements and documentation of my written and visual work. This auto-ethnographic approach coupled with a historical analysis proposes the significance of dilliniating and cultivating awareness toward the limits, parameters and utility of didacticism as an effective tool in art making and art teaching. Through my thesis, I unpack an understanding of didacticism in the visual arts for the art educator interested in raising an awareness of didacticism to support art students who are concerned with conveying information in their artistic practices. How do we, as art educators, understand, process and engage our students who fall within an ever shifting spectrum of didactic or non-didactic art? How do we teach this awareness of didacticism's utility and aesthetic respectability? How can I teach my students or myself how to use this tool instead of fearing its taboo in art?

In this book a new theory on instruction is presented - a reflective theory of school didactics - uniquely incorporating continental German and Nordic research traditions in the theory of didactics (Didaktik), together with Anglo-American research on teaching (instructional research) and cognitivist theory. School didactics is defined as a field of research within general education. This field is limited to research and theory aiming at understanding the pedagogical practice which takes place in institutionalized educational settings guided by a curriculum collectively agreed upon. As the theory is designed to be valid for institutionalized education framed by a politically accepted curriculum, it is a culturally seen regional theory of education, not a universal one. According to this school theory the fundamental features of an institutionalized pedagogical process consist in the intentional, interactional, teaching-studying-learning process that is culturally and historically developed and situated. However, the present model does not explicitly formulate goals nor the means of educational practice. Rather, the model emphasizes the teacher and student as reflective and intentional subjects where the teacher is acting as the representative of the collective but also as the learners' advocate. Because of this the theory presented is not a normative or prescriptive theory, instead it is a reflective theory.
