This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893 edition. Excerpt: ... A LETTER ON THE DEAF AND DUMB FOR the benefit of those who can speak and hear, which treats of the origin of inversions in language, of harmony of style, of sublimity of situation, and of some advantages which the French language possesses over other languages, ancient and modern, followed by some thoughts on expression in the fine arts. I grant that this title will apply equally to the large number of those who speak without understanding, and the small number of those who understand without speaking, as to the very small number of those who speak and understand, and for whose special use my letter is intended. I am not fond of quotations, especially of those from the Greek; they give a learned air to a book, an air which is no longer fashionable. They frighten away readers, and if I were deciding from a publisher's point of view I should leave out such scarecrows. But I am not a publisher, so pray suffer the Greek quotations to stay where you find them. If you care less for a book being good than that it should be read, it is not so with me; what I care for is to make a good book, although it may risk being read the less. As to the number of subjects I touch upon, flitting from one to another, I would have you know and teach that this is no fault in a letter, where one is allowed to digress freely, and where the last word of a phrase is a sufficient link to the next. Now, in order to treat of inversions we must first examine how languages are formed. Objects that strike the senses are those which are first observed, and those which unite various qualities which appeal to the senses are named first. Then the various qualities are separately observed and named, and these form most of our adjectives. Later on, these sensible qualities...

Chance ordained that Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was not only a philosopher, playwright and writer, but also a salonnier. In other words, an art critic. In 1759, his friend Grimm entrusted him with a project that forced him to acquire "thoughtful notions concerning painting and sculpture" and to refine "art terms, so familiar in his words yet so vague in his mind". Diderot wrote artistic reviews of exhibitions – Salons – that were organized bi-annually at the Louvre by the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. These reviews, published in the Correspondence Littéraire, were Diderot’s unique contribution to art criticism in France. He fulfilled his task of salonnier on nine occasions, despite occasional dips in his enthusiasm and self-confidence. Compiled and presented by Jean Szenec, this anthology helps the contemporary reader to familiarize himself with Diderot’s aesthetic thought in all its greatness. It includes eight illustrations and is followed by texts from Jean Starobinski, Michel Delon, and Arthur Cohen. ‘On Art and Artists’ is translated by John Glaus, professor of French and an amateur expert of the XVIIIth century.

Best Book of the Year – Kirkus Reviews A spirited biography of the prophetic and sympathetic philosopher who helped build the foundations of the modern world. Denis Diderot is often associated with the decades-long battle to bring the world’s first comprehensive Encyclopédie into existence. But his most daring writing took place in the shadows. Thrown into prison for his atheism in 1749, Diderot decided to reserve his best books for posterity–for us, in fact. In the astonishing cache of unpublished writings left behind after his death, Diderot challenged virtually all of his century's accepted truths, from the sanctity of monarchy, to the racial justification of the slave trade, to the norms of human sexuality. One of Diderot’s most attentive readers during his lifetime was Catherine the Great, who not only supported him financially, but invited him to St. Petersburg to talk about the possibility of democratizing the Russian empire. In this thematically organized biography, Andrew S. Curran vividly describes Diderot’s tormented relationship with Rousseau, his curious correspondence with Voltaire, his passionate affairs, and his often iconoclastic stands on art, theater, morality, politics, and religion. But what this book brings out most brilliantly is how the writer's personal turmoil was an essential part of his genius and his ability to flout taboos, dogma, and convention.

A lively examination of the life and work of one of the great Enlightenment intellectuals Philosopher, translator, novelist, art critic, and editor of the Encyclopédie, Denis Diderot was one of the liveliest figures of the Enlightenment. But how might we delineate the contours of his diverse oeuvre, which, unlike the works of his contemporaries, Voltaire, Rousseau, Schiller, Kant, or Hume, is clearly characterized by a centrifugal dynamic? Taking Hegel's fascinated irritation with Diderot's work as a starting point, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht explores the question of this extraordinary intellectual's place in the legacy of the eighteenth century. While Diderot shared most of the concerns typically attributed to his time, the ways in which he coped with them do not fully correspond to what we consider Enlightenment thought. Conjuring scenes from Diderot's by turns turbulent and quiet life, offering close readings of several key books, and probing the motif of a tension between physical perception and conceptual experience, Gumbrecht demonstrates how Diderot belonged to a vivid intellectual periphery that included protagonists such as Lichtenberg, Goya, and Mozart. With this provocative and elegant work, he elaborates the existential preoccupations of this periphery, revealing the way they speak to us today.

THIS book has three different and almost independent attractions -- leaving its print, paper, and wrapper out of the question -- that of Mr. Pollock's excellent translation and annotations, which may be said to belong to the department of scholarship; that of Mr. Irving's preface, the interest of which is chiefly personal; and that of the intrinsic merit of the original Paradoxe as 'a contribution to French literature and to the aesthetics of the drama. It will be perhaps most convenient to take these in reverse order. Diderot has hitherto been very badly represented by English translations; indeed, until the version of the Neveu de Rameau which Mr. John Morley subjoined to his book on the Encyclopædist and his company, there was hardly any such worth ranking as literature. Yet there are not many French authors who, from the excess of material over formal excellence, deserve better to be known in England by translations; and it so happens that this Paradoxe sur le Comédien is a peculiarly favorable example of the author. Perhaps, with the exception of the already mentioned Neveu de Rameau and a few minor pieces, it is the most favorable. No competent authority denies the importance of Diderot in the history of aesthetic criticism; it is hardly an exaggeration to say that he is the father of all such as have done good criticism in art and letters for the last century. Although nothing can be further from his desultory and irregular fashion of comment than a definite critical creed or formulary, he more than any other may be regarded as the discoverer of the legitimate critique as against the illegitimate which for fully two thousand years had based itself (for the most part without any just title) on the authority of Aristotle. Glimmerings may of course be found in the Latin writers; glimmerings in the critics of the seventeenth century, especially in Dryden and Corneille. But, as regards literature first of all (which was long almost the only recognized subject of criticism), and other arts in the second place, Diderot, more than anyone else, deserves the credit of having thrown aside the idea of an archetypal model of each particular kind to which every example of that kind was bound to conform, and of having introduced the plan of treating individual excellence as if it were individual. --Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, Volume 73
