Die "Achse Berlin-Rom" war mehr als ein politisch-militärisches Projekt, sie erstreckte sich auf alle Bereiche der Gesellschaft. Wissenschaft und Kunst machten keine Ausnahme. Auch hier entstanden intensive Beziehungen, deren Wurzeln bis in die 1920er Jahre zurückreichten. Zahlreiche Intellektuelle beteiligten sich an dieser akademischen "Achse" zwischen Italien und Deutschland – unter ihnen auch viele deutsche Juden, die in Italien eine "Zuflucht auf Widerruf" (Klaus Voigt) gefunden hatten, ehe sie nach der Einführung der Rassengesetze auch dort unter Druck gerieten. Namhafte Experten aus fünf Ländern analysieren die Vielfalt dieser lange ignorierten Netzwerke, die freilich nicht nur von Kooperation und Transfer geprägt waren. Genauso oft standen sie im Zeichen von Abgrenzung und latenter Konkurrenz, die auch das "Achsen"-Bündnis insgesamt bestimmten. Die Botschaft dieses innovativen Ansatzes ist klar: Für eine interdisziplinär informierte Geschichtswissenschaft gibt es noch viel zu tun.

The book investigates the rather neglected "intellectual" collaboration between National Socialist Germany and other countries, including views on knowledge and politics among "pro-German" intellectuals, using a comparative approach. An updated history of classical philology had long been a desideratum of scholars of the ancient world. The volume edited by Diego Lanza and Gherardo Ugolini is structured in three parts. In the first one (“Towards a science of antiquity”) the approach of Anglo-Saxon philology (R. Bentley) and the institutionalization of the discipline in the German academic world (C.G. Heyne and F.A. Wolf) are described. In the second part (“The illusion of the archetype. Classical Studies in the Germany of the 19th Century”) the theoretical contributions and main methodological disputes that followed are analysed (K. Lachmann, J.G. Hermann, A. Boeckh, F. Nietzsche and U. von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff). The last part (“The classical philology of the 20th century”) treats the redefinition of classical studies after the Great War in Germany (W. Jaeger) and in Italy (G. Pasquali). In this context, the contributions of papyrology and of the new images of antiquity that have emerged in the works of writers, narrators, and translators of our time have been considered. The book offers an extensive study on the convoluted history of the research of algebraic surfaces, focusing for the first time on one of its characterizing curves: the branch curve. Starting with separate beginnings during the 19th century with descriptive geometry as well as knot theory, the book focuses on the 20th century, covering the rise of the Italian school of algebraic geometry between the 1900s till the 1930s (with Federigo Enriques, Oscar Zariski and Beniamino Segre, among others), the decline of its classical approach during the 1940s and the 1950s (with Oscar Chisini and his students), and the emergence of new approaches with Boris Moishezon’s program of braid monodromy factorization. By focusing on how the research on one specific curve changed during the 20th century, the author provides insights concerning the dynamics of epistemic objects and configurations of mathematical research. It is in this sense that the book offers to take the branch curve as a cross-section through the history of algebraic geometry of the 20th century, considering this curve as an intersection of several research approaches and methods.
