Der Band bietet - neben werkgeschichtlichen Analysen - theoriebezogene Studien zu zentralen Themen der Herrschaftssoziologie Max Webers: zur Grundkategorie des Kampfes, dem Begriff der Patrimonialbürokratie, zur 'Monopolisierung der legitimen Gewaltsamkeit' sowie zur Konzeption der plebiszitären Führerdemokratie. Das Wissen um die zeitgenössischen Fachdebatten läßt den Charisma-Begriff sowie die Kapitalismusthese in noch prägnanteren Konturen erscheinen, während Max Webers Nichtbeachtung der zeitgenössischen Selbstverwaltungsdiskussion irritiert. Entmystiziert wird die alte Forschungsthese, daß Webers 'elitistisches Axiom' italienisch beeinflußt sei. Die welthistorische Dimension der Herrschaftssoziologie dokumentieren neue Studien zur antiken Stadt, zu Webers Bild des okzidentalen Mittelalters und der chinesischen Geschichte. Auch wenn Webers Kenntnisstand in Detailfragen heute vielfach revisionsbedürftig erscheint, bleiben seine Ansatzpunkte von ungebrochener Aktualität.
