Die Transformationen der Zarenmacht in der 'Zeit der Wirren' bieten ein reiches Projektionsfeld für den interdisziplinären Diskurs über Grundaspekte autokratischer Herrschaft. Ausgehend vom moskowitischen Beispiel setzt sich dieser Band mit historischen Analogien in Japan, Kaschmir, Kastilien, dem Karolingerreich und Byzanz auseinander. Grenz- und epochenübergreifend werden einige spannungsreiche Forschungsschwerpunkte in Bezug auf die Vormoderne behandelt, darunter die praktische Umsetzung autokratischer Herrschaftsmodelle in verschiedenen Kulturen, Formen der weiblichen Teilhabe an der Macht, die Rolle von Herrschaftseliten in politischen Umbruchphasen sowie die Bedeutung religiöser Ideen für dynastische Herrschaftslegitimationen. Starting with the Muscovite example, the book deals with the phenomena of 'Macht' and 'Herrschaft' in a period of crisis, using historical analogies in Japan, Kashmir, Castile, Carolingian Empire and Constantinople. Across borders and epochs, such key aspects of research are dealt with concerning the pre-modern age, as the practical implementation of autocratic models of rule in different cultures, forms of female participation in power, the influence of ruling elites in phases of political upheaval, and the significance of religious ideas for the legitimation of political and dynastic power. Thus, the idea of the Third Rome, the fates of 'false tsars' or the first crowned Russian tsarina Marina Mniszech get an interdisciplinary reflection.

Eschatology played a central role in both politics and society throughout the early modern period. It inspired people to strive for social and political change, including sometimes by violent means, and prompted in return strong reactions against their religious activism. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, numerous apocalyptical and messianic movements came to the fore across Eurasia and North Africa, raising questions about possible interconnections. Why were eschatological movements so pervasive in early modern times? This volume provides some answers to this question by exploring the interconnected histories of confessions and religions from Moscow to Cusco. It offers a broad picture of Christian and, to a lesser extent, Jewish and Islamic eschatological movements from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, thereby bridging important and long-standing gaps in the historiography. Apocalypse Now will appeal to both researchers and students of the history of early modern religion and politics in the Christian, Jewish and Islamic worlds. Thus, the volume offers individual case studies as well as theoretical reflections on the exercise of power and structures of domination, and then also takes a critical look on research approaches. Zu den konfliktregulierenden Funktionen von Herrschaft treten solche einer Agrarpolitik auf verschiedenen Ebenen, die nicht nur den aus militärischen Konflikten entstandenen Schäden, sondern auch den laufenden Erfordernissen einer wesentlich auf Nassreisanbau basierenden Agrikultur Rechnung zu tragen haben. In early medieval Japan, the political constitution displays increasingly complex features: both old and new elites gather around two centers of power, the imperial court and the shogunate. At the same time, multi-layered rights over property and income develop. The proliferation of conflicts between and within these fluid figurations eventuate new forms of legal and military regulation by the ruling authorities, who are thus compelled to commit to a cycle of continual adaption. In addition to the conflict-mediating functions of authority, agricultural policies on multiple levels emerge that have to take into account not only the damages incurred in the wake of military escalations, but also the fixed demands of an agriculture rooted in wet rice cultivation.

Im Laufe des 15. Jahrhunderts verwandelte sich das lose Konglomerat der russischen Teilfürstentümer schrittweise in eine christliche Autokratie mit dem Moskauer Großfürsten und späteren Zaren an der Spitze. Eine entscheidende Rolle in der Legitimation des entstehenden Zarentums spielten Endzeiterwartungen. Sie hingen mit dem Glauben an das Ende der Welt im Jahre 1492 zusammen. Das ausgebliebene Jüngste Gericht wurde dabei zum entscheidenden Impuls, Moskau erstmalig zum neuen Konstantinopel zu proklamieren. Im Fokus dieser komparativen Arbeit stehen die ersten russischen politisch-eschatologischen Herrschaftsvorstellungen, die an der Schwelle zur Neuzeit entworfen wurden. Es wird gezeigt, auf welche Art und Weise solche Vorstellungen in der Moskauer Rus’ zum Zweck der Herrschaftslegitimation herangezogen wurden und worin die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der Aktualisierung dieses Gedankenguts in der Moskauer Rus’ im Vergleich zu den anderen christlichen Reichen bestanden. Die vergleichende Perspektive auf die politische Eschatologie ermöglicht es, eine Brücke zwischen den west- und osteuropäischen Endzeitvorstellungen zu schlagen und dadurch die Geschichte der Rus’ als Geschichte des christlichen Europas zu untersuchen.

When looking at pre-modern monarchical societies, one does not expect to observe fundamental dissent directed at the social order as such or at the political system. As a rule, criticism was limited to individual monarchs, their performance and decisions. While discontent could lead to insurrection and rebellion, which normally only culminated in the ruler being replaced by another monarchical figurehead, the subtler methods of voicing criticism were applied within a framework of legality, of a set of customs or of a code of rules of the game and intended to improve the performance of the incumbent or reform his conduct at court. The various forms of verbal or staged censure of rulers in pre-modern monarchical societies are the subject of this volume.

Sergei Feodorovich Platonov's Time of Troubles is a classic study of the years 1598-1613, a turbulent and decisive period in Russian history. Available for the first time in English, this work will be a valuable tool for students of the medieval as well as modern periods. Platonov, himself a tragic victim of the regimentation imposed on Soviet cultural life in the 1920s, was born in 1860 and attained immense public and professional recognition in Russia as a leading historian. In his work he synthesized, to a high degree, two major traditions of Russian historiography: the St. Petersburg "school," which emphasized the collection and rigorous use of primary sources, and the Moscow "school" with its socioeconomic and geopolitical approaches. Time of Troubles represents the finished product of a lifetime spent in research, writing, and teaching. In broad terms it treats nearly a century and a half of Russian history (1500-1648); in detail it scrutinizes developments in the Muscovite State from 1598 to 1613.
