Amerika entwickelte sich im Zuge des Ersten Weltkrieges zu einer neuen Weltmacht. Aufgrund dieser Position konnten nun viele Entscheidungen, auch im Bezug auf Europa, maßgeblich beeinflusst werden. So engagierte sich der amerikanische Präsident Woodrow Wilson mit seinem Vierzehn-Punkte-Programm für eine Friedensordnung in Europa. Aufgrund wachsender Kritik fand dieses Programm in den Verträgen von Versailles allerdings nur ansatzweise Berücksichtigung. Letztendlich ratifizierten die USA den Versailler Vertrag nicht, womit sie kein Mitglied des Völkerbundes wurden. Amerika grenzte sich somit von den übrigen Siegermächten des Ersten Weltkrieges ab und schien künftig einen eigenständigen Weg zu gehen.Aber bedeutete die Nichtratifizierung des Versailler Vertrages tatsächlich eine Nichteinmischung in europäische Konflikte? Betrieb Amerika insgeheim nicht doch eine konsequente Deutschlandpolitik? Ziel meiner Arbeit soll es sein, mit Hilfe der folgenden Ausführungen sinnvolle Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden. Es soll also abschließend geklärt werden, ob Amerika tatsächlich die Rolle eines neutralen Beobachters einnahm oder ob sich die Beziehung zum Deutschen Reich sogar vielleicht zu einer echten Partnerschaft entwickelte.Zu meiner Vorgehensweise ist zu sagen, dass ich detaillierter auf die Ereignisse eingehen werde, an denen sich dich deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen besonders gut beschreiben lassen. Ich werde in meiner Arbeit einzelne Punkte besonders sorgfältig betrachten und erläutern, anstatt einen insgesamt oberflächlichen Überblick zu geben. Der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt soll dabei auf den wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen liegen, da diese sowohl die Politik der USA, als auch die Politik Deutschlands in starkem Maße beeinflusste. Insbesondere sollen hierbei die deutschen Reparationsleistungen betrachtet werden. Dabei werde ich zunächst auf die deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg eingehen, um die weiteren Betrachtungen verständlicher zu machen. Sowohl das Vierzehn-Punkte-Programm des amerikanischen Präsidenten Woodrow Wilson, als auch der Vertrag von Versailles sollen hier berücksichtigt werden. Des Weiteren werde ich die wirtschaftlichen Verflechtungen der beiden Nationen genauer beleuchten. Hierbei soll besonders die amerikanische und deutsche Einstellung zu den Reparationsleistungen hervorgehoben werden, mit der sowohl eine Betrachtung des Dawes-, als auch des Young-Plans einhergeht. Abschließend soll dargelegt werden, inwieweit die Weltwirtschaftskrise die deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen veränderte. Schließlich kam es zu einer endgültigen Lösung der Reparationsfrage aufgrund des Hoover-Moratoriums.
