The public administration in Germany has been described as one of the world's 'classic administrative systems'. It was on German soil that one of the prime examples of the efficient service structure in public affairs originally developed which is so characteristic of the modern state. In view of the cracks in recent German history the continuing efficiency of public administration is considered remarkable. In addition German scholars - from Max Weber to Fritz Morstein Marx - whose works have attracted attention from far beyond the confines of Germany, have contributed to the establishment of basic academic principles for an international discussion of administrative phenomena. But even in Germany the negative aspects of state bureaucracies have not gone unobserved and criticism from abroad of our particular political system has not exactly spared our public administration either. In some places ideas may persist that no longer match the reality of state and administration in today's Federal Republic of Germany.

Crossroads written by Dorothy Hobson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with Performing Arts categories.

'Crossroads', one of the most successful programmes on television, has attracted a huge and devoted audience of some 15 million regular viewers. Yet, like many soap operas, it is derided by the press and treated with distaste by other programme-makers. Indeed, despite its popularity, its very future currently hangs in the balance. While doing independent research on popular television in the ATV studios in 1981, Dorothy Hobson observed the storm that developed around the company's decision to dispense with Meg Mortimer, star of 'Crossroads'. The repercussions of that announcement were immense and highlighted the gulf between the broadcasting authorities and the progaramme's critics, and the 'Crossroads' production team and the audience. Through talking to the actors, the programme controller and the viewing public, she went on to explore the contradictions of why and how a soap opera is made and viewed, examining the appeal of 'Crossroads' and attempting to locate the programme as part of contemporary popular culture. The result is a revealing, controversial but also very absorbing analysis of a soap opera in crisis.

Rethinking Transnationalism written by Ludger Pries and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-18 with Political Science categories.

During the last two decades transnationalism has become an important conceptual approach and research programme. However, the term has steadily become vague and indistinct underlining the need for conceptual précising as well as more defined empirical research. Rethinking Transnationalism does this in two ways. On one hand it presents theoretical contributions to the transnationalism approach and, on the other hand, it offers empirical studies in the field of the transnationalization of organizations. The book integrates outstanding international scholars of transnationalism and migration studies with specialists from a broad variety of disciplines that apply the transnationalism approach to different organizations such as NGOs, feminist networks, educational spaces and European Works Councils. Presenting an overview of transnationalism and the surrounding debates, this interdisciplinary volume will be of interest to students and scholars of Politics, International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology, Educational Sciences, Migration and Geography.

The Stechlin written by Theodor Fontane and has been published by Camden House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Art categories.

Theodor Fontane (1819-98), widely regarded as Germany's most significant novelist between Goethe and Thomas Mann, pioneered the German novel of manners and upper-class society, following a trend in European fiction of the period. The Stechlin is Fontane's last book and his political testament. Like Effi Briest, his great work on the place of women in Bismarck's empire, it is set at the apex of the Wilhelmine era, both in Berlin and on the estate of a Prussian Junker on the shores of Lake Stechlin. It is a significant historical and cultural document, probably the finest chronicle of the life style of the German upper classes in the late nineteenth century; Fontane portrays the best in the life and ways of the passing Prussian aristocrats, while describing his hopes for the future of Germany and its nobility, which were never to be fully realized. Although this novel has been translated into many languages, it has never before been available in English; this edition thus fills an important gap in the significant works of European literature accessible to English readers.

The gentle melancholy of two people coming together in a way which can never lead to full satisfaction, the quiet tragedy of a separation not forced by external powers but by the constant pressure of circumstances-this is what sounds through this splendid story. "Trials and Tribulations" is built entirely on this motive. An honest sturdy young officer and a decent pretty girl get to know each other on an excursion. Unconsciously they drift into a relation where heart meets heart, the breaking of which causes the deepest pain. But both see clearly from the beginning that there is no other end. For they know that the world is stronger than the individual, and the many small moments than the one supreme. They know it, for they are, like their creator, resigned realists. They shut their eyes only in order not to see the end too near. (Richard M. Meyer)---The interest of Fontane's novels lies rather in character than in action. While he portrays many types characteristic of Berlin and the surrounding region, and is very successful in rendering local color and the atmosphere of the particular circle described in each book, his penetration into universal human nature is sufficiently deep to raise him far above provincialism. His effort is to represent people vividly and naturally in their normal relations, not to strain after sensational or even dramatic situations. "Trials and Tribulations" ("Irrungen Wirrungen", 1887) gives an excellent idea of his power. In a gently moving story, told without the forcing of emotion or the contriving of exciting scenes, he deals with the pathos of the relation between a man and a woman, alike in an attractive simplicity of character, but forced apart by difference of rank. The situation is laid before us without expressed censure or protest, and is allowed to have its effect by the sober truth of its presentation. Fontane's is an honest and sincere art, none the less great because unpretentious. (W.A.N.)
