The European Union's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, or EMAS, has been in existence since 1995, with over 3,000 sites registered to the Scheme. However, even to the present day, there exist very few texts which address the specific requirements of the standard and provide "real world" examples of the practical considerations companies and sites must contend with in order to successfully earn registration to the Scheme. No author has synthesized the controversies, debates, developments and amendments which have surrounded and impacted this often controversial Scheme, until now.This text definitively breaks down each component of the EMAS regulation, including the appendices and applicable EU guidance documents on the topic, providing a step-by-step analysis of the Scheme. Mit EMAS wurde von der EU ein Umweltmanagement- und Umweltprüfungssystem geschaffen, das Organisationen seit 1995 auf freiwilliger Basis ermöglicht, ihren Beitrag zum Umweltschutz zu leisten und ihr ökologisches Image zu verbessern. Gleichzeitig soll EMAS auf der europäischen Ebene mithelfen, die Umweltzielstellung der EU im Rahmen einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung zu verwirklichen. Im Jahre 2001 erfolgte eine Revision von EMAS zur EMAS II, bei der u.a. die ISO 14001 Regelungen teilweise mit integriert wurden. Seit dieser Zeit sank auch die Teilnehmeranzahl in Deutschland von damals ca. 2.000 auf derzeit noch ca. 1.500 Organisationen. Auf europäischer Ebene steigt zwar die Teilnehmerzahl, bleibt aber auch hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Derzeit ist für EMAS eine Revision zur EMAS III in Arbeit, die sich aber wahrscheinlich bis 2010 hinziehen wird. Hierbei werden die möglichen Neugestaltungsvorschläge und deren Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten diskutiert. Dieses Buch soll einen Überblick über Umsetzung und Entwicklung von EMAS in Deutschland bieten. Die wesentlichen Ursachen dieser Entwicklung werden aufgezeigt, und es wird beurteilt, inwieweit die Ziele des Systems erreicht wurden. Des Weiteren werden der aktuelle Stand der Revision zur EMAS III und die wesentlichen Neugestaltungsvorschläge der interessierten Kreise diskutiert, um mögliche Zukunftsperspektiven für EMAS aufzuzeigen.
