Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Vielfach wird heute der bundesdeutschen Orientalistik vorgeworfen, sie sei angestaubt und befasse sich in den meisten Fällen mit uninteressanten abstrakten Themen, jedoch kaum mit den brisanten politischen Thematiken der jüngeren Geschichte. Diesen Vorwurf kann ich bei meiner Studie, welche 1986 in der DDR an der Sektion Afrika- und Nahostwissenschaften der Universität Leipzig entstand, nicht gelten lassen. Meine Diplomarbeit befasste sich ausgehend von der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung seit der Jahrhundertwende eingehend mit den damals aktuellsten politischen Entwicklungen in den arabischen Monarchien der Golfregion unter Verwendung aller damals verfügbaren Quellen aus Ost und West. Die Arbeit stützt sich daher nicht nur auf Quellen aus dem gesamten deutschsprachigen Raum, auf englisches und russisches Schrifttum der ehemaligen Sowjetunion sondern auch auf die sehr schwer beschaffbaren arabischen Quellen. Sie ist bis heute die einzige ihrer Art geblieben, da sich ihre Thematik in einem politisch brisanten Themenfeld bewegte. Die Kenntnis dieser historischen Entwicklungen sind m. E. fair das Verständnis der gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen in der Golfregion von bleibender Bedeutung. Ist es doch leider traurige Realität, dass es für den Zeitraum der neueren Geschichte der Länder des Nahen und mittleren Ostens bis heute fast keine fundierten umfassenden historischen Darstellungen gibt. Diplomarbeiten aus DDR-Zeiten dürften heute ohnehin bereits Raritäten sein. Allgemein galt ein Zeitraum von 10 Jahren an den jeweiligen Sektionen der Universitäten als Aufbewahrungspflicht. Danach wanderten sie soweit mir bekannt ist in der Regel ins Altpapier. Die Universitäten im Ostens selbst wären demzufolge heute also kaum noch im Besitz von Arbeiten aus DDR -Zeiten. Damit dürften leider viele Diplomarbeiten als historisches Quellenmaterial unwiederbringlich verloren sein. Arabische und russischsprachige Quellen der ehemaligen Sowjetunion werden jeweils mit der lateinischen Umschrift und den entsprechenden Zusatzzeichen wiedergegeben. Dies sollte bei einer Digitalisierung beachtet werden. Die Arbeit baute auf folgenden einzigartigen militärwissenschaftlichen Seminararbeiten auf, die ich während meines Studiums an der Universität Leipzig anfertigte: - Die Rolle militärischer Aktionen in der Zeit der Entstehung und Ausbreitung des Islam Leipzig 1984. - Die Rolle der Armee in Saudi- Arabien Leipzig 1985.
