Dabei wird auch nicht selten die Rolle, die die Familien spielen, besonders hervorgehoben: Tyrannische Mütter und brutale Väter sind oft Zentralfiguren einer mehr auf das Psychologische, als auf das direkt Kriminelle oder die Ermittlung angelegten Handlung. Doch Familien können auch auf andere Art Gewalt provozieren und sich eher unbewusst schuldig machen. Die Unfähigkeit der Familien, die zu sehr an traditionellen Mustern festhalten, ihre Kinder zu schützen, wird insbesondere in den Kriminalromanen von Frauen des so genannten Neuen Goldenen Zeitalters thematisiert, wobei eine wechselseitige Kommunikation und der Verzicht der eigenen Individualität zugunsten der Gemeinschaft als zentral angesehen werden müssen. Dem langbewährten whodunit und auch dem whydunit schlieβt sich so als kritisch-didaktischer Ansatz innerhalb des Kriminalromans der whytheydie an, der nebst dem Reflektieren über eine gewaltsträchtige Gesellschaft auch Strategien der Kriminalitätsbekämpfung entwickeln kann, indem die Faktoren, die Opfer zu Opfer werden lassen, identifiziert werden.

What was it like to be disabled in the Middle Ages? How did people become disabled? Did welfare support exist? This book discusses social and cultural factors affecting the lives of medieval crippled, deaf, mute and blind people, those nowadays collectively called "disabled." Although the word did not exist then, many of the experiences disabled people might have today can already be traced back to medieval social institutions and cultural attitudes. This volume informs our knowledge of the topic by investigating the impact medieval laws had on the social position of disabled people, and conversely, how people might become disabled through judicial actions; ideas of work and how work could both cause disability through industrial accidents but also provide continued ability to earn a living through occupational support networks; the disabling effects of old age and associated physical deteriorations; and the changing nature of attitudes towards welfare provision for the disabled and the ambivalent role of medieval institutions and charity in the support and care of disabled people.

At the close of the twentieth century the stereotyping and demonization of 'others', whether on religious, nationalist, racist, or political grounds, has become a burning issue. Yet comparatively little attention has been paid to how and why we fabricate images of the 'other' as an enemy or 'demon' to be destroyed. This innovative book fills that gap through an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural approach that brings together a distinguished array of historians, anthropologists, psychologists, literary critics, and feminists. The historical sweep covers Greco-Roman Antiquity, the MIddle Ages, and the MOdern Era. Antisemitism receives special attention because of its longevity and centrality to the Holocaust, but it is analyzed here within the much broader framework of racism and xenophobia. Is learning disability determined from birth? Psychoanalysis has always striven to reconstruct damaged human subjectivity. However, with a few exceptions, people with learning disabilities have long been excluded from this enterprise as a matter of course. It has been taken for granted that learning disability is a deficient state in which psychodynamics play but a minor role and where development is irrevocably determined by organic conditions. First published in German in 1980s and published here in English for the first time, this brave and provocative book was one of the first to attempt to understand learning disabilities in terms of psychoanalysis and socio-psychology. Controversially, the author does not distinguish between a primary organic handicap and a secondary psychological one; rather, she argues that it is developed from the very outset of the process of socialisation during the interaction of caregiver and infant, and therefore gives the analyst room to work on this maladapted socialisation. She illustrates the effectiveness of this theory when put into practice in a number of illuminating case studies. Still as influential and powerful as when it was first published, Nameless will be of interest to psychoanalysts and clinicians from across the mental health services who work with people with learning disabilities.
