Anders als viele Erwachsene, verstummen Kinder in der Regel nicht, wenn sie mit dem Tod konfrontiert werden. Im Gegenteil; die Begegnung mit Sterben und Tod löst bei Kindern meist viele Fragen aus, die nach Antworten verlangen. Das Wissen um die Andersartigkeit der kindlichen Trauer sollte bei Eltern. Ihnen wird abverlangt, dem trauernden Kind dort zu begegnen, wo es sich mit seiner Trauer befindet, um ihm angemessene Hilfestellung und Unterstützung zukommen zu lassen. Die Reaktion und der Umgang der Erwachsenen mit diesen kindlichen Fragen, sind ausschlaggebend für das Verhältnis, das das Kind zum Tod entwickelt. Ängste, Unsicherheiten und Sprachlosigkeit entstehen bei Kindern insbesondere da, wo ihre Fragen unbeantwortet bleiben und wo sie erleben, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Tod unerwünscht ist. Eine offene Umgangsweise mit dem Thema und die ehrliche Beantwortung der kindlichen Fragen, ist eine Grundvoraussetzung dafür, dass auch Kinder dem Umgang mit dem Tod angstfreier begegnen können und lernen, den Tod als natürliche Grenze des Lebens zu akzeptieren.

Bevor ein Kind dem Tod begegnet, hat es zumeist bereits Erfahrungen mit Verlusten gemacht. Es kennt den Schmerz, wenn ein Freund plötzlich in eine andere Stadt zieht, wenn es selbst aus verschiedenen Gründen die Kindergartengruppe verlassen muss oder schlichtweg ein geliebtes Spielzeug verliert. Der Schmerz und die Trauer sind belastend, jedoch unumgänglich, um nach einem erlittenen Verlust wieder Freude zu empfinden. Trauer ist „der Weg, den man gehen muss, um nach einer Verletzung wieder heil zu werden.“ Die Trauer kann als ein sehr persönliches Lebensgefühl beschrieben werden, die jeden tief ergreift und unausweichlich ist. Sie erfasst den ganzen Menschen und äußert sich in verschiedenen Gefühlen wie Wut, Zorn, Ohnmacht, Angst, Schuldgefühle, Verzweiflung und Hilflosigkeit. Trauer drückt sich in vielseitigen Gefühlsäußerungen und Verhaltensweisen aus und verschont niemanden. Nur die durchlebte Trauer selbst führt zur Bewältigung eben dieser. Trauer ist eine angeborene, natürliche, gesunde Fähigkeit, die es Erwachsenen und Kindern ermöglicht, schmerzhafte Verluste zu begreifen, sie zu akzeptieren, sie in ihr Leben zu integrieren und sich schließlich neu zu orientieren. Die Trauer macht den Menschen die emotionale Bedeutung der Beziehungen, in denen sie leben, bewusst. Durch die Trauer wird deutlich, wie sehr sie den Verstorbenen vermissen. Vielen Menschen ist es jedoch möglich, durch die Trauer zu einer neuen, versöhnten Lebenseinstellung zu finden, indem sie anfangs den Verlust beklagen, jedoch später Dankbarkeit dafür empfinden, dass ihnen diese Beziehung einst geschenkt worden war.
