Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Zeitschriften und Kinder - ein Thema, das in der Forschung nur wenig Beachtung findet. Was die Zeitschrift leisten kann, zum Beispiel den Kindern ein Fenster zur Welt zu öffnen, ihnen Wissen und Anregungen vermitteln, darüber findet nur wenig Diskussion statt. Abgesehen von den Interessen des Zeitschriftenmarktes, der hauptsächlich das Konsumverhalten ermittelt, wurde die Zeitschriftenforschung bisher insgesamt und vor allem in Bezug auf Kinder stark vernachlässigt. Das Fernsehen, aber auch immer mehr Analysen interaktiver Medien wie Computer und Videospiele stehen stattdessen im Mittelpunkt zahlreicher Untersuchungen. Generell überwiegen Wirkungsfragen gegenüber Analysen über die Medienbedürfnisse der Kinder. Diese Forschungsschwerpunkte verwundern nicht, hält man sich die starke Veränderung des Medienangebotes in den letzten Jahren vor Augen, die vor allem bei Kindern auf große Begeisterung trifft: Sie surfen im World Wide Web, zappen durch ein sehr viel üppiger gewordenes Programmangebot und spielen an ihrer Playstation oder Gamecube. Lydia allerdings lässt sich von diesen Entwicklungen auf dem Medienmarkt nicht davon abbringen, auf dem Weg zum Bäcker einen Umweg über die Apotheke einzuschlagen, um sich und ihrem Bruder die neueste Ausgabe der an Kinder gerichteten Kundenzeitschrift 'Medizini' zu besorgen. Ihre von neuen Medienangeboten ungetrübte Freude an der Zeitschrift unterscheidet sie nicht von anderen Kindern ihres Alters: Mehr als jedes zweite 6- bis 13-Jährige Kind hat mehrmals pro Woche eine Zeitschrift in der Hand, hinzu kommt bei knapp der Hälfte der Kinder ein Comic-Heftchen. Der auf dem deutschen Kinderzeitschriftenmarkt dominierende Egmont Ehapa Verlag konnte seine verkaufte Auflage in den letzten vier Jahren um 15 Prozent steigern. Wie kann die Zeitschrift vor dem Hintergrund steigender intermedialer Konkurrenz bestehen? Welche Bedeutung hat sie nach wie vor für die Kinder? Diesen Fragen möchte ich im Rahmen dieser Forschungsarbeit nachgehen. Ich konzentriere mich dabei auf 8- bis 11-jährige Kinder in der Lebensphase der 'mittleren Kindheit': Vom lesefähigen Alter bis zur beginnenden Pubertät. Die Kinder setzen sich meinen Annahmen zu Folge aktiv mit den Angeboten der Zeitschrift auseinander, holen sich aus ihnen heraus, was sie brauchen und verwerten können.
